ず魚（きよにく）の類（たくひ）を只（たゝ）食（くひ）に食（くひ）けれは亭主（ていしゆ）あやしみ
て好物（かうふつ）の豆腐（とうふ）に手（て）を付（つけ）給（たま）はぬはいかにととひ
けれは此（この）先生（せんせい）の云（いひ）けるは魚肉（きよにく）を見（み）ては性命（せいめい）を顧（かへりみ）
ずと是は豆腐（とうふ）は好物（かうふつ）にて命（いのち）なれとも魚肉（きよにく）は尚（なを）
又 好物（かうふつ）にて是に遇（あひ）て命（いのち）の事（こと）も思（をもは）れぬとなり
今（いま）酒（さけ）を以（もつて）命（いのち）とし是を過（すこし）て性命（せいめい）を顧（かへりみ）ざる者（もの）

現代語訳
【右丁】
ず、魚肉の類をただ食べに食べたので、亭主が不思議に思って「好物の豆腐に手をつけられないのはなぜですか」と問うと、この先生が言うには「魚肉を見ては性命を顧みず」と。これは豆腐は好物で命であるけれども、魚肉はなお一層の好物で、これに出会って命のことも思われないということである。
今、酒をもって命とし、これを過度に愛して性命を顧みない者が多いので、ひとり魚肉の先生を笑うべきでもないだろう。

The teacher replied, "When I see fish and meat, I do not regard my life." This means that while tofu was his favorite food and like life to him, fish and meat were even more favored, and when encountering them, he could not even think of life itself.
Now there are many who make alcohol their life and love it excessively without regard for their actual life, so we should not laugh at the fish-and-meat teacher alone.
