対（むか）ひて。とく〳〵そのものを将（い）て退出（まうて）候へと仰（おふせ）ける。このときまても為義（ためよし）
朝臣（あそん）は。黙然（もくねん）として居（ゐ）給ひたるが。かしこみて稟（まうす）やう。為朝（ためとも）既（すで）に十三 歳（さい）
さのみ幼（いとけな）きといふにもあらず。もしこの期（ご）に及（およ）びてその事を果（はた）さずは。歒（てき）
陣（ぢん）に臨（のぞ）みて後（うしろ）を見するにも劣（おと）れり。彼（かれ）一人は惜（おし）むに足（た）らず。恨（うらむ）らくは源（げん）
家（け）累代（るいたい）の部名（ぶめい）を汚（けが）し候わん歟（か）。只管（ひたすら）御免（みゆるし）を蒙（かうむ）りて。彼（かれ）が随意（まに〳〵）なさしめ
候わんと宣（のたま）へば。かゝるうへはともかくもと仰（おふせ）ける程に。為朝（ためとも）は欣然（きんぜん）として信西（しんせい）に

又よくその矢（や）を取得（とりえ）たらんには。何をか給わり候ぞといふ。信西（しんせい）含笑（ほゝえみ）て。御身

老功（ろうこう）のものなれば。この光景（ありさま）を見て思ふやう。こは浅（あさ）まし。院（いん）の御所（ごしよ）にて。故（ゆゑ）
なく兵器（へいき）を弄（もてあそぶ）さへあるに。人を射殺（いころ）させて楽（たのしみ）とし給ふ事。武烈天皇（ぶれつてんわう）の
悪（あし）き御行（おんおこな）ひにも勝（まさ）れり。何とせんと躊躇（たゆたふ）を。信西（しんせい）端（はし）ちかく立出（たちいで）て。とく
とくと催促（さいそく）す。二人も今はせんすべなく。予（かね）て二の矢（や）あるべしと定（さだ）められた
れば。矢（や）二条（ふたすぢ）を手挟（たばさ）みて立（たち）むかへば。君（きみ）はさらな也。当座（とうざ）の人々手（て）に汗（あせ）を握（にぎ）り。
今の為朝（ためとも）が命（いのち）は。日影（ひかげ）まつしら露（つゆ）よりもなほ消（きえ）やすかるべしと思ひ居（お）れ
りける。かくて式成（のりしげ）弓（ゆみ）に矢（や）つがひ。満月（まんげつ）のごとく引しぼり。矢声（やごゑ）をうけて切（きつ）て発（はな）つを。
為朝（ためとも）雌手（めて）に丁（ちやう）と取（と）る。程もあらせず。則員（のりかず）がはなつ矢（や）胸下（むなもと）ちかく飛来（とびく）る
を。是（これ）をも雄手（ゆんで）に受（うけ）とめたり。こは射損（いそん）ぜし朽（くち）をしさよ。縦対（たとひい）ころすまでに
至（いた）らずとも。やはこの度（たび）は取（と）られじと。両人斉（ひと）しく引しぼり。しばし透間（すきま）を窺（うかゞひ）

（頼長公は）為義に向かって、「早々にその者を連れて退出いたされよ」と仰せになった。この時まで為義朝臣は黙然として座っておられたが、かしこまって申し上げるには、「為朝はすでに十三歳、さほど幼いというわけでもございません。もしこの場に及んでその事を果たせなければ、敵陣に臨んで背を見せるよりも劣ったことになりましょう。彼一人は惜しむに足りませんが、恨めしいのは、源家累代の武名を汚すことになりましょうか。ひたすらご寛恕を賜り、彼の思うままにさせていただきとうございます」と申し上げた。すると「そのようなことならば、どうとでもせよ」とお言葉があったので、為朝は欣然として信西に向かい、「式成・則員は無双の弓取りである。その矢面に立つこと、これ以上の幸いはない。ただし、その矢を取り得なければ、私の命はたちまち終わるであろう。私は命をもってあなたに賭けましょう。私がもしよくその矢を取り得たならば、何をいただけますかな」と言う。信西はほほえんで、「御身がよく矢を取ったならば、この首なりとも差し上げましょう。信西は仏門の徒である。たとえ今すぐ御身が射殺されたとしても、死後にいっそう悪しく報いることはいたしますまい」と言い欺くのを、為朝は耳にも

かけず、広い庭へ走り下り、矢の届く間合いを測って立った。かの式成・則員は老練の者であったから、この有様を見て思うには、「これはなんと浅ましいことよ。院の御所にて、理由もなく兵器をもてあそぶことさえあるのに、人を射殺して楽しみとなさるとは。武烈天皇の悪しき御行いにも勝っている。どうしたものか」と躊躇っているところへ、信西が側近くに歩み出て、「早く早く」と催促する。二人も今はもはや仕方なく、あらかじめ二本の矢を射ることと定められていたので、矢を二条手挟んで立ち向かうと、君（頼長公）はもちろんのこと、その場に居合わせた人々は手に汗を握り、今の為朝の命は、日の光に照らされた白露よりもなお消えやすかろうと思い、固唾をのんでいた。やがて式成が弓に矢をつがえ、満月のように引き絞り、矢声を上げて切って放つのを、為朝は左手（め手）でちょうど取った。間もなく、則員の放つ矢が胸元近くに飛んでくるのを、これをも右手（弓手）で受け止めた。「これは射損じた、何とも悔しいことよ。たとえ射殺すまでに至らずとも、今度こそは取られまいと」、両人ともに引き絞り、しばし隙間を窺い……

All this while, Tameyoshi, the Consultant (*Ason*), had remained seated in silence; but now he humbly addressed the assembly, saying: "Tametomo is already thirteen years of age — he is not so very young as all that. Should he fail to accomplish this feat when the moment has come, it would be worse than turning his back and fleeing on the battlefield. He alone is of no great loss to mourn, but what I lament is that he would bring disgrace upon the martial reputation that the Minamoto clan has built up over generations. I humbly beg your gracious pardon, and ask that you allow him to do as he sees fit." At this, the reply came: "If that is the case, then let it be as you will." Tametomo, with great delight, turned to Shinzei and said: "Norishige and Norikazu are peerless archers. To stand before their arrows is the greatest fortune I could ask for. However, if I fail to catch their arrows, my life will be instantly ended. I stake my life on you. But if I do indeed catch their arrows, what will you give me?" Shinzei smiled and replied: "If you catch the arrows well, I will offer you this very head of mine. Shinzei is a man of the Buddhist faith — even if you are shot dead this very moment, I swear I shall not treat you any more harshly in the afterlife." The said Norishige and Norikazu were seasoned veterans, and seeing this situation, they thought to themselves: "How deplorable this is. Even the mere handling of weapons within the precincts of the Retired Emperor's palace is wrong enough — but to take pleasure in having a person shot dead? This surpasses even the wicked conduct of Emperor Buretsu. What are we to do?" As they hesitated, Shinzei stepped close to them and urged: "Quickly, quickly!" The two men, now with no choice in the matter, and having been ordered beforehand that there would be two arrows to shoot, took up their two arrows, holding them ready, and turned to face him. Not only the lord (Yorinaga) himself, but all those present wrung their hands in cold sweat, thinking that Tametomo's life at this moment was even more easily extinguished than a dewdrop on a white flower caught in the light of the sun. Then Norishige nocked his arrow to his bow, drew it back like the full moon, and loosed it with a cry — and Tametomo caught it cleanly with his left hand (*mete*).
