この二人（ふたり）の瀧口（たきぐち）は。原（はじめ）白河院（しらかわいん）の武者所（むしやところ）にて。的弓（まとゆみ）の上手（じようず）也。鳥羽院（とばのいん）御位（みくらゐ）を
伝（つた）へ給ひて後（のち）。瀧口（たきぐち）にめされぬ。ある時三尺五寸の的（まと）を給（たまわ）りて。これが第二（だいに）の
くろみを射（い）おとして。持（も）てまゐれよと仰（おふせ）あり。己（み）の時（とき）給わりて。未（ひつじ）の時（とき）に
射（い）おとしてまゐれり。これ既（すて）に養由（ようゆう）に等（ひと）しとて人みな誉（ほめ）のゝしりけり

と言えば、信西はこれを聞いて呆れ果て、しばらく返答もしなかったが、やがて「からからっ」と笑い出し、「口は横に裂けているとて、言えば言われるものだな。およそ芸術というものは、多くの月日を重ね、年を越えて、切磋琢磨の功を積まなければ、その極みに到達し難い。たとえ生まれた時から習い得たとしても、わずか十余年に過ぎないではないか。御身みずから考えてみよ。人が悉く木偶（人形）ではない。われが彼を射ようとすれば、彼もまた我を射るであろう。よく射る者はまたよく防ぐとも言う。今試みに矢を取るべきか」と言えば、為朝は聞く間もなく、「蒲衣は八歳にして舜の師となり、柏益は五歳にして火を司った。賢愚巧拙は年齢をもって論ずべきではない。いかなる矢継ぎ早にも仰せ付けて射させ給え。大悲の知恵の矢なりとも、たやすく取って見せ申すべし」と言う。信西ははじめのほどは、ひどく懲らしめようと思っていたが、為朝がさらに屈した様子もないので、深く憤り、おのれの威勢のほどを示そうと思ったか、

すっと立ち上がって、「誰か控えておるか。早く弓矢を手挟んで参れ」と呼ばわれば、「かしこまりました」と答えて、式成・則員という二人の滝口が、弓矢を携えて御階（みはし）のほとりに参上した。信西は見て、「しかじかの事である。この小冠者（こわっぱ）に一矢つかまつり候え」と言う。この二人の滝口は、もとは白河院の武者所に仕えており、的弓の上手であった。鳥羽院がご位を受け継ぎ給うた後、滝口に召されたのである。ある時、三尺五寸の的を賜って、「この第二の黒みを射落として持ってまいれよ」とお命じがあった。己の時（午前十時頃）に賜わり、未の時（午後二時頃）には射落としてまいった。これはすでに養由（古代中国の名射手）に等しいとて、人はみな誉めそやしたのであった。今は年老いたれど、気力はいまだ昔に変わらない。為朝がたとえ六つの肘（ひじ）があったとしても、この者どもの矢面を逃れることはできまいと思われた。左府頼長公も、今は見かねて信西に向かい、「為朝は形こそ大人びているが、言わば黄口（くちばしが黄色い）の童べである。戯れも人によるべきで、信西にはいともそぐわぬように見えましたぞ」と仰せになったが、また為義に……

Upon hearing this, Shinzei was utterly dumbfounded and for a moment made no reply at all, but then suddenly burst out laughing with a "ha ha ha," and said: "Truly, a mouth split sideways can say anything it pleases. In the arts and disciplines generally, one cannot reach the highest level without accumulating months and years — surpassing one month, surpassing one year — and piling up the merit of rigorous polishing and refinement. Even if one had learned from the very swaddling clothes, it would still be no more than a mere ten-odd years. Think for yourself. Not all men are wooden dolls. If I wish to shoot at him, he too will shoot at me. It is also said that one who shoots well also guards well. Shall I now put this to the test with an arrow?" Before Shinzei had even finished speaking, Tametomo replied: "Hōi became the teacher of the sage-king Shun at the age of eight; Hakueki oversaw the use of fire at the age of five. Wisdom and foolishness, skill and clumsiness, cannot be judged by age alone. Command me to shoot in whatever rapid succession you wish. Even if it were the arrow of Great Compassion and Divine Wisdom, I shall readily take it up and show you." Shinzei had initially intended to chastise Tametomo severely, but since Tametomo showed not the slightest sign of submission, Shinzei grew deeply enraged. he suddenly rose to his feet and called out: "Is anyone in attendance? Quickly bring your bow and arrows and come hither!" "At your command!" came the response, and two palace guards (*takiguchi*) named Norishige and Norikazu came forward to the vicinity of the staircase, bearing their bows and arrows. Shinzei looked at them and said: "Here is the matter — let loose one arrow at this young upstart." These two palace guards had originally served in the *musha-dokoro* (warriors' office) of the Retired Emperor Shirakawa and were expert archers. After the Retired Emperor Toba had succeeded to the throne, they were summoned as *takiguchi* guards. On a certain occasion, they were given a target of three shaku and five sun, and commanded: "Shoot down the second black ring and bring it back." Having received this command at the Hour of the Snake (around 10 a.m.), they had shot it down and brought it back by the Hour of the Sheep (around 2 p.m.). For this feat, it was said that they were already the equal of Yang You — the famed archer of ancient China — and everyone praised them extravagantly. Now, though they had grown old, their spirit and vigor were still unchanged from the old days. It seemed to all that even if Tametomo had six elbows, he could not possibly escape the arrows of these men. Even the Minister of the Left, Lord Yorinaga, could no longer watch and turned to Shinzei, saying: "Tametomo may have the appearance of a grown man, but he is, so to speak, a yellow-beaked child.
