The one wolf that had remained behind — the one called Nokaze ["Wild Wind"] — came close, wagging its tail. Feeling an unaccountable pity, Tametomo spoke to it of the events of Yamaō's death that day, as though speaking to a person. Nokaze, upon hearing this, could bear no more: it lowered its head, eyes brimming with tears, and showed every sign of deep grief. Witnessing this scene, Tametomo felt the sorrow over Shigezue's fate all the more keenly. That very night, he summoned a Buddhist monk to recite sutras, and performed memorial rites and prayers for the long-lasting repose of both that man [Shigezue] and Yamaō.
