【Right Page】 Returning, Kihēji said: "This crane appears to have badly injured its wings, and shows no sign of being able to fly away. Please look — it had a small golden chain attached to its foot, and this chain had become coiled around a branch, holding it in place. Since you cut through it with a single arrow, it was able to easily release itself from the branch, I believe. However, looking at what appeared to be the end of that chain, scattered near the crane where it had fallen, I found it to be a golden tablet, and so I picked that up as well," and he presented the tablet. On it was engraved: "Kōhei 6, Third Month, the day of Kinoto-Tori — released by Minamoto no Ason Yoshiie (康平六年三月甲酉源朝臣義家放焉)." Tametomo was greatly astonished, and spoke thus: "Long ago, during the Former Nine Years' War in Ōshū, my distant ancestor Yoriyoshi and his son slaughtered many rebels. Deeply lamenting this, Yoshiie, after subduing Sadatō and Munetō, had the ears of the fallen soldiers cut off and sent up to the capital, where they were buried near the Nishi no Tōin, north of Rokujō Bōmon, and a hall was built over them. This is what is now known as the Minoni-dō [Hall of Ears]. Around that same time, it is said that Yoshiie also released many cranes with golden tablets attached to them in that place, as a memorial offering for the souls of the dead. 【Left Page】 This crane must be one of those very birds. From Kōhei 6 to this present year of Kyūju 1 is ninety-eight years. The month is now the Third Month, and today also happens to be a day of the Rooster [Tori] — how exceedingly strange. This crane, though it had a tablet fastened to its foot, must have felt no sorrow about it, and so had flown all the way to the far reaches of the western seas, wandering freely through heaven and earth. That its chain happened to become caught in the pine branch must have been because it was startled by the earlier thunder and made this mishap. Had I passed by without noticing, the crane would surely have perished — but could it be that the divine spirit of my great-great-grandfather Yoshiie has guided me to save this crane?" He felt both reverential awe and heartfelt joy, and spoke of the connection between them. Kihēji, too, was filled with a sense of wonder. He took up the crane in his arms once more, escorted Tametomo back to his residence, and then returned to his own home. In the meantime, Tametomo took great care of the crane, keeping it in a cage and hand-feeding it food and water himself. Before many days had passed at all, it had fully recovered. Before all of this, on that very day when Tametomo returned to his own chambers…
