余制銃陣以授従学之徒其徒問曰
銃陣之制詳節之所述既巳聴命敢
問兵起於律何謂乎余対曰律万事
之本也兵之所受法度也十二律呂
之名三分損益律呂相生所謂律娶
妻呂生子者也歴代楽志之所載不
待具論也其制専繋楽聲王者征伐
之際明応月之律而聲和則伐不和
則不伐也是為王者被一代之聲教
現代語訳
兵律弁
私が銃陣の制度を作って学問に従事する弟子たちに教えたところ、その弟子が問うて言った。「銃陣の制度の詳細な節目については、すでにお聞きして承知いたしました。あえてお尋ねしますが、兵が律に起源を持つとはどういう意味でしょうか。」私は答えて言った。「律はあらゆる事柄の根本である。兵が受ける法度（規範）である。十二律呂の名称、三分損益による律呂相生、いわゆる『律が妻を娶り呂が子を生む』というものである。これは歴代の楽志に記載されているところで、詳しく論じる必要もない。その制度は専ら楽の音律に関わるものである。王者が征伐を行う際には、月の律に明確に対応させて、音律が調和していれば征伐し、調和していなければ征伐しない。これが王者が一代の音楽による教化を受けるということである。」

When I created the system of gun formations and taught it to my disciples who were engaged in learning, one of them asked: "We have already heard and understood the detailed provisions of the gun formation system. May I dare ask what it means that military affairs originate from the musical pitch pipes (ritsu)?" I replied: "The pitch pipes are the foundation of all things. They are the laws and regulations that military affairs follow. The names of the twelve pitch pipes (ritsu-ryo), the generation of pitch pipes through the three-part loss-and-gain method, what is called 'the ritsu takes a wife and the ryo bears children' - these are recorded in the musical treatises of successive dynasties and need not be discussed in detail. This system is exclusively connected to musical tones. When a ruler undertakes military campaigns, he must clearly correspond to the pitch pipe of the month - if the sounds are harmonious, then he attacks; if they are not harmonious, then he does not attack. This is how a ruler receives the moral instruction through music for his entire reign."
