このように抱きいだきなさって、御座の上にお座らせになり、お髪をかき撫でて「何のご用事がおありになって遅くいらっしゃったのですか。お差し支えのお暇のことも察せられますが」と微笑みながらおっしゃったので、四、五人のお乳母の女房もみな慣れ親しんでいる、このお寵愛のご幸運よと見上げ申し上げるのももっともなことと思われる。中将がこのように見てしまってから、高い雲の上にも上りたく、千尋の底の竜宮城へも入りたく、あまりの心の辛さに、霜や雪にでもたちまちに消え失せてしまいたい。生きて物思いをする身は、いかなる罪の報いであろうかと、耐え難く思われるけれども仕方がない。あ
