現代語訳

それが最後の見納めとなった。既に出立なさる時、弟を呼び寄せて暇乞いを申し上げて「皆の人は恨めしく思うだろうが、お前だけは私の形見と思うので、名残惜しく思われる。出家をする前に、人に語ってはならない、ここだけの話をしておこう。書経殿へ参れ。何度も言うが、お前はどのような世になっても私を忘れてはならない」と暇乞いを言って出立なさった。弟は見送り申し上げて、人目を憚って涙があふれるのを袖で隠し、そうではないかのように振る舞って、みすぼらしい庵に帰って泣く以外に何もすることがなかった。

That became their final farewell. As he was about to depart, he summoned his younger brother and took his leave, saying: "All others may resent me, but you alone I think of as my living memorial, so I find it difficult to part from you. Before I become a monk, let me tell you something that must never be spoken to others—a secret matter between us alone. Go to Shokyō-den. Again and again I say: no matter what world may come, you must never forget me." With these parting words, he departed. The younger brother saw him off, hiding his overflowing tears in his sleeves to avoid public notice, pretending as if nothing was wrong, and returned to his humble dwelling where he had nothing to do but weep.
