ひたるかたちなり身に物をそかきたるおとこの
身には大将のひめきみの事をそかきたり女御
の身にはとうの中将の事をそかきたる物なり
見るに身のけよたちおそろしくそおほゆる
これらのしわさにてとしころ【幾年かの間】ふるさとのことはわ
すれけり心うきかなやとおもひなみたこほれふ
るさとの人そこひしき此かたしろを見るにお
そろしとて心にうちすて給ふ六ゐのしん人に
みせんとてたとうかみ【畳紙…懐紙】につゝみて人にもたせた
りその夜十らくかうのありつるにこもりゐさせ
給ひて出もやり給はす中将はにはかに心に物

りけれは心もすみわたりふくふえもおもしろし

抱き合っている形である。身に物を書き付けてある。男の身には大将の姫君のことを書き付けてあり、女御の身には東の中将のことを書き付けてあるものである。これを見ると身の毛がよだって恐ろしく思われる。このような呪いの仕業によって、長年の間、故郷のことは忘れてしまっていたのだった。情けないことだなあと思って涙がこぼれ、故郷の人が恋しい。この人形を見ると恐ろしいということで、心に捨て置かれる。六位の臣は人に見せようと思って懐紙に包んで人に持たせた。その夜、十楽公のところに籠もっていらして、出てもやられない。中将は急に心に物思いが

湧き起こって、よろずの涙があふれ出て、何事も悲しく感じられたので、心も澄み渡り、笛も面白く聞こえる。帝の宣旨があって「いつでも実明卿の笛の面白くないことはないけれども、特に今夜こそ面白く思われる。出てこい、昼間も」と言って、清涼殿の棚に胡竹の笛があり、名前を「音丸」と申すものを呼び寄せて「これはあなたが吹く笛である。失ってはならない」と言って、錦の袋に入れながらお与えになった。

Thoughts arose and countless tears flowed out. Since everything seemed sad to him, his heart became clear and pure, and even the flute music sounded delightful. There was an imperial decree: "Lord Saneakira's flute playing is never uninteresting, but tonight it seems especially delightful. Come forth, even in the daytime." There was a bamboo flute on the shelf of the Seiryōden, one called "Otomaru," which he summoned, saying "This is a flute for you to play. You must not lose it," and gave it to him while placing it in a brocade bag.
