かけたる夜のふすま【掛け布団】ならへしまくらのひとつになり
とりひそめたるけしきことびわもふきしふえも

人の御心をうらむへきにあらすたゝうき身のほと
そかなしきなとかゝれたりけれはことはりせめてか

きはつかしけれともかくてこそいつらめとおほせ
ありてわたらせ給ひしを大しんほかよりわらはを
御つかひにて中将はいまはこれへはくましき人

かけてあった夜具の布団や並べてあった枕が一つになって取り散らかしてある様子、琴や琵琶も吹いていた笛も一か所に取り集められて、琴の響板のもとにも琵琶の覆手のもとにも笛の穴の中にも薄く書いた物がある。取り出して見られると、あの人の筆跡である。読み続けて見られると、涙もまったく止まらず、薄くかすれて色褪せて、
このように「こちらに来て」ということがこんなに悲しい、笛や竹の
憂き節々に音ばかりを泣く
つらいならば私も心が変わってほしい

なぜ憂き人が恋しいのだろう
あの人の心を恨むべきではない。ただ憂き身の程がこんなに悲しいなど書いてあったので、もっともなことだ。せめて悲しさのあまりに手紙を顔に押し当てて泣く以外のご様子はおありにならない。しかしどこへ行くべきかは恥ずかしいけれども、このようにしているよりはましであろうとおっしゃって、いらっしゃったところ、大臣が他から女房を使いに立てて「中将は今はここには来てはならない人である。お退屈でいらっしゃるなら、中将の乳母である春日のもとへいらっしゃい」とおっしゃいましたので、「承知いたしました」とお返事申し上げになって、その後姫君が泣いて

The night bedding that had been laid out and the pillows that had been arranged side by side were now gathered into one disheveled heap. The koto, biwa, and flutes that had been played were all collected in one place. There were things written faintly at the base of the koto's soundboard, under the biwa's tailpiece, and inside the holes of the flute. When he took them out to look, they were in that person's handwriting. As he continued reading, his tears would not stop at all, the ink faded and dim:
"This way of calling 'come here' is so sorrowful, the flute and bamboo
In their melancholy passages, only weep with sound

She should not resent that person's heart. It is only the sadness of her unfortunate situation that is written there, which is quite reasonable. In her overwhelming grief, she could do nothing but press the letter to her face and weep. However, though it would be shameful to say where she should go, she thought it would be better than remaining like this, and when she came out, the Great Minister sent a lady-in-waiting from elsewhere with the message: "The Middle Captain is now a person who should not come here. If you are feeling lonely, please go to Kasuga, the Middle Captain's wet nurse." She replied, "I understand," and afterward the young lady wept
