　に鍋島正則召抱後に細川越中守忠興に奉公し
　て尾藤金右衛門迚三千石取島原落城之砌本
　丸之塀下江附者なし鉄炮厳敷打出故也此時
　紀州浪人平塚勘兵衛被進唯壱人抽而塀際
　へ着尾藤も薄紅之大吹貫を差而近付平塚
　与共に面茂不振塀を乗処を内ゟ鑓長刀に而
　散々尓突けるを尾藤歟口に鑓を突込弱る処を
　真中を突抜き終に討死す類平塚者尾藤
　与同し具乗希るを鑓に而被突落己に討死与見
　へける哉細川際印内美庄太夫懸合せ塀之内

　ゟ平塚を突伏たる敵を突倒し亭平塚を助
　る平塚又起上り塀下へ附て其働減に無比
　類候此勘兵衛者秀吉公之御時平塚因幡守
　吉就か甥也内美庄太夫者古早川隆景之
　家老浦兵部宗勝か孫也何茂逸物之末
　孫故与其頃沙汰有之也
三河之物語曰上使衆大多有程一所尓集り
　先を見繕ひ候はて跡に而下知致さ連候事　
　天下之取沙汰也　上意御掟者縦討死与
　思召候而茂必々聊尓無用先懸無用与御

現代語訳

密かに鍋島正則に召し抱えられ、その後細川越中守忠興に奉公して、尾藤金右衛門として三千石を取った。島原落城の際、本丸の塀の下に近づく者はなかった。鉄砲が激しく撃ち出されていたからである。この時、紀州浪人の平塚勘兵衛が進み出て、ただ一人刀を抜いて塀際に近づいた。尾藤も薄紅色の大きな陣羽織を着て近づき、平塚と共に顔も振り向かずに塀を乗り越えようとしたところ、内側から槍や長刀でひどく突かれた。尾藤が口に槍を突き込まれて弱ったところを、真ん中を突き抜かれて、ついに討死した。同様に平塚も尾藤と同じように乗り越えようとしたが、槍で突き落とされ、もはや討死したかと見えた時、細川方の内美庄太夫が駆け合わせて、塀の内側から平塚を突き伏せた敵を突き倒して平塚を助けた。平塚はまた起き上がって塀の下に近づき、その働きは比類がなかった。この勘兵衛は、秀吉公の時代の平塚因幡守吉就の甥である。内美庄太夫は、昔の小早川隆景の家老である浦兵部宗勝の孫である。どちらも優れた武将の末裔であるため、その頃評判になった。

『三河物語』によれば、上使の衆が大勢いるほど一箇所に集まって、先陣の様子を見定めず、後から指示を出すようなことは天下の物笑いの種である。上意や御掟では、たとえ討死と思し召しになっても、必ずいい加減に無用な先駆けをしてはならないとされている。

Bitō also approached wearing a light crimson ōbukuki (campaign coat), and together with Hiratsuka, without looking back, they attempted to scale the wall. From inside, they were severely attacked with spears and naginata. When Bitō was weakened after having a spear thrust into his mouth, he was pierced through the middle and finally died in battle. Similarly, when Hiratsuka attempted to climb like Bitō, he was struck down by a spear and appeared to be dead. However, Uchimi Shōdayū from the Hosokawa side rushed forward and struck down the enemy who had knocked down Hiratsuka from inside the wall, thus saving Hiratsuka. Hiratsuka rose again, approached the base of the wall, and his performance was incomparable. This Kanbei was the nephew of Hiratsuka Inaba-no-kami Yoshinari from the time of Lord Hideyoshi. Uchimi Shōdayū was the grandson of Ura Hyōbu Munekatsu, a former retainer of Kobayakawa Takakage. Since both were descendants of distinguished warriors, they were much talked about at that time.

According to the "Mikawa Monogatari," when many high-ranking officials gather in one place and give orders from behind without properly observing the front lines, it becomes the laughingstock of the realm. According to the lord's will and regulations, even if one is prepared to die in battle, one must never engage in careless and unnecessary charges.
