元寿下條￣ヲ亦考ル￣ニ観音草ト
吉祥草相似テ別種観音草ハ
葉幽蘭ヨリ広ク短シ肥タル者ハ二
三尺二及フ真ノ観音草ハ琉球風
蘭ト云葉長ク立ツ白花ヲ開ク考ニ
其形風蘭ノ意ナシ琉球麦門冬
也根ニ珠ナシ又可考〇吉祥草ハ
葉観音草ヨリほ細ク長クツ偉
ニ異也〇又一種熨斗蘭アリヨク

観音草（キチジョウラン）
生花千節麓に曰く
吉祥草
又観音草と載す
【上段】
元寿下條をまた考えるに、観音草と吉祥草は相似て別種である。観音草は葉が幽蘭より広く短い。肥大した者は二、三尺に及ぶ。真の観音草は琉球風蘭と云い、葉長く立って白花を開く。考察するに、その形は風蘭の趣がない。琉球麦門冬である。根に珠がない。また考察すべきである。○吉祥草は葉が観音草よりやや細く長く、大いに異なる。○また一種、熨斗蘭があり、よく三物が相似て見分けが困難である。○また翁蘭があり、麦門冬の類である。○観音草には二種がある。一種は大葉で琉球の産、一種は小草で山野にあり、下條に図示する者である。なお秋の部六巻に両種を詳しく載せる。
【中段】
大和本草に曰く
葉は大葉の麦門冬の如くして薄い。また蘭に似るが花がなく、また門冬もない云々
本草拾遺の吉祥草の註に載せる所、これに似ている。しかし夏に紫花を開いて穂を成すと云うのは観音草ではない云々 予が言うに
大和本草に言う観音草の説明はよく当草に合っている。しかし花がないと載せるのはいかがか。吉祥草は異名であろう。されども夏月は花がなく、冬至にまれに開く。
和漢三才図会に観音草○吉祥草を別に載せている。両図説ともよく合っている。
草木花詩譜に云う、花は紫色に蕾んで然れども開きがたい。家居に之を種えて花があれば吉祥なりと言う。各々二種の者か考察すべきである。また吉事草と云う者があり、花葉大いに異なる。

Kannon-sō (Kichijōran - Aspidistra)

【Upper Section】
Examining Genju's lower entries further, Kannon-sō and Kichijō-sō are similar but different species. Kannon-sō has leaves broader and shorter than Yūran. Large specimens reach two to three feet. True Kannon-sō is called Ryūkyū-fūran, with long upright leaves bearing white flowers. Upon examination, its form lacks the character of Fūran. It is Ryūkyū-bakumondō. The roots lack pearls. This requires further study. ○ Kichijō-sō has leaves somewhat narrower and longer than Kannon-sō, greatly different. ○ There is also a species called Noshi-ran, and these three plants are so similar they are difficult to distinguish. ○ There is also Okina-ran, which belongs to the Bakumondō family. ○ There are two types of Kannon-sō: one type has large leaves and is from Ryūkyū, one type is small grass found in mountains and fields, which is illustrated in the lower entries. Both species are described in detail in Volume 6 of the Autumn section.
【Middle Section】
Yamato Honzō states:
The leaves are like those of large-leafed Bakumondō but thin. They also resemble orchids but have no flowers, and also lack Mondō, etc.
What is recorded in the annotations of Kichijō-sō in Honzō Shii resembles this. However, saying it blooms purple flowers forming spikes in summer does not apply to Kannon-sō, etc. I say:
The explanation of Kannon-sō in Yamato Honzō matches this plant well. However, how can it state there are no flowers? Kichijō-sō must be an alternate name. Nevertheless, there are no flowers in summer months, and rarely blooms at winter solstice.
The Wakan Sansai Zue lists Kannon-sō ○ Kichijō-sō separately. Both illustrations and descriptions match well.
The Sōmoku Kashi-fu states: the flowers are purple buds that do not open easily. When planted at home, if flowers appear, it is called auspicious. Should we consider each as two species? There is also something called Kichiji-sō, which differs greatly in flowers and leaves.

Kichijō maintains the same color through all four seasons, growing among springs and rocks
Mountain villagers insert it in vases to honor ancestors. Although in shaded dwellings, it remains lush green without withering. When present in homes, auspicious events are assured and flowers naturally bloom, hence the name Kichijō. Zhangzhou Prefecture Records
