1. Genroku 14 (1701), year of the snake, March 14th: Today there was an audience with imperial messengers, court nobles, and court officials. At that time, in the palace, Lord Asano Takumi-no-kami wounded Lord Kira Kōzuke-no-suke, a kōke official, with a blade. Lord Kōzuke-no-suke sustained injuries. Metsuke Kajikawa Zenbei restrained them and separated both parties. Lord Takumi-no-kami was placed in the custody of Lord Tamura Ukyō-daibu and ordered to commit seppuku the same day. The details of this incident are thoroughly recorded in various chronicles, so I omit them here.
