One: 1,200 ryō - expenses for all courtesans in Yoshiwara on the night of the seventh day of the sixth month. Total: 2,400 ryō, it is said.
Jōson's note: Due to this Takao affair, Lord Sakakibara was transferred from Harima Province Himeji to Echigo Takada, it is said. How this story was passed down is unclear, but in the house of Kosuge Sanai, the village headman (ōkimoiri) of Jisha Village in Kambara District, Echigo Province, there is an inkstone box said to have been sent by Lord Sakakibara to Takao. It is made of solid ground with gold nashiji lacquer, featuring the Genji cart mon in raised maki-e with bush clover decoration. When I stayed at Sanai's house during my village inspection rounds, I saw it myself, and it did not appear to be an ordinary item.
One: Having written about the above matter, I was suddenly reminded of events from the fourth year of Kan'en, the year of the sheep. There was a great earthquake in Echigo Takada, and I had a copy of Lord Sakakibara's official report, which I record here.
At my domain of Takada in Echigo Province, due to an earthquake at the hour of the ox on the twenty-fifth day of the fourth month, a record of damage to the castle interior, retainer residences, castle town, and countryside:
One: 157 samurai residences collapsed, One: 44 of the same severely damaged
One: 63 stipend-receiving tenements collapsed, One: 8 of the same severely damaged, One: 6 ashigaru tenements collapsed
One: Over 500 residences housing samurai and ashigaru who currently have no official residences and are placed in town houses collapsed
One: 33 deaths among retainer families (15 men, 18 women), One: Many injuries among townspeople and rural inhabitants combined
One: Of 2,922 town houses (2,496 collapsed, 326 damaged)
One: Of 196 town storehouses (46 collapsed, 155 damaged)
One: Of 282 townspeople deaths (108 men, 174 women)
One: 2 post station horses died, One: 8 horses injured
One: Much damage and loss to sake, oil, and all liquid goods containers in town commerce
One: Three fires in the town during the earthquake
