 細川越中守殿御家来ニテ幸此度勤番ニテ御当地ニ罷在候間  将軍様上覧之儀古来ヨリ古法モ有之儀承及候勿論私共  為ニモ司之儀ニ候故何卒右追風召出サレ 上覧ノ御式此者へ  御尋下サレ規式執行候様ニ仰付サセラレ下置レ候様仕度段色〻  御願申上候処彼是六ケシキ様ニ思召レ先〻其儀ハ其方トモ勧進  相撲其外御前相撲ノ法式ヲ以テ相勤候様ニ仰聞ラレ然トモ私トモ  身分稀ノ儀ニ御坐候故繰返シ御願申上候処其儀ニ不及打過候  然ル故ニ土俵四本柱巻絹水引迄モ御前相撲格式ニ取調候処  同月十日暮六ツ時細川越中守殿御内吉田氏ヨリ年寄行事急キ  罷越候様申来候依之早速参候処今日戸田采女正殿ヨリ追風召  出サレ 将軍上覧式古法之通罷出可相勤旨仰付サセラレ候ニ  付早速土俵築直シ尤御作事ヨリ御役人并人足大勢罷出追風  差図ヲ以テ不残仕替申候右ニ付行事相撲人礼義相心得候ヤ又ハ  无心得候ハヽ明日間ニ合候様ニ可致差図由申サレ候然トモ古ヘヨリノ  作法ノ義荒増心得罷在候由返答仕候依之明日早〻仕度場ニ  テアラマシ承リ無相違相勤申候  六月十一日暁六ツ時竹橋御門外御舂屋前ニテ惣年寄行事相撲人  不残染帷子麻上下帯刀ニテ相揃場所休息所溜ヘ入差扣罷在候      上覧土俵之故実 一四本柱ノ間三間四方柱ヨリ柱マテノ内土俵七俵ツヽ四ツ合テ数廿八  俵ハ天ノ廿八宿東西南北ニ須弥四天ヲ合セテ惣数三十六地理  法釼相撲人古三十六人ヲ司ル法ナリ

現代語訳

細川越中守殿の御家来であって、幸いこの度勤番で当地に滞在しておりますので、将軍様上覧の儀について古来より古法もある儀式と承知しております。もちろん私どもにとっても司の儀でございますので、何卒右の追風を召し出され、上覧の御式についてこの者へお尋ね下され、規式を執行するよう仰せ付けられますよう仕りたく、色々と御願い申し上げましたところ、あれこれ面倒に思し召され、先ずはその儀はそなたども勧進相撲その他御前相撲の法式をもって相勤めるよう仰せ聞かされました。しかしながら私ども身分には稀な儀でございますので、繰り返し御願い申し上げましたところ、その儀に及ばず打ち過ごすよう言われました。 そのような訳で土俵四本柱巻絹水引まで御前相撲格式に取り調えましたところ、同月十日暮六つ時に細川越中守殿の御内から吉田氏より年寄・行事は急いで参るよう申してまいりました。これにより早速参りましたところ、今日戸田采女正殿より追風を召し出され、将軍上覧式を古法の通り罷り出て相勤めるべき旨仰せ付けられました。 これにより早速土俵を築き直し、もっとも御作事より御役人並びに人足大勢が罷り出て、追風の差図をもって残らず仕替え申しました。これについて行事・相撲人の礼義を心得ているか、または無心得であるなら明日間に合うよう差図すべき由を申されました。しかしながら古えよりの作法の儀はおおよそ心得ております由を返答いたしました。これにより明日早々に仕度場にておおよそ承り、相違なく相勤め申します。 六月十一日暁六つ時、竹橋御門外御舂屋前にて総年寄・行事・相撲人残らず染帷子・麻上下・帯刀にて相揃い、場所休息所溜へ入り差し控え罷在しました。      上覧土俵の故実 一、四本柱の間三間四方、柱より柱までの内、土俵七俵ずつ四つ合わせて数二十八俵は天の二十八宿、東西南北に須弥四天を合わせて総数三十六、地理法剣、相撲人古くは三十六人を司る法なり。

He is a retainer of Lord Hosokawa Etchū-no-kami, and fortunately is currently stationed in this locality on duty rotation. Regarding the matter of the Shogun's viewing, I understand that there are ancient laws and ceremonies from times past. Of course, for us as well, this is a matter of directorship, so we earnestly requested in various ways that the aforementioned Oikaze be summoned and consulted regarding the ceremony of the viewing, and that proper execution of the protocols be ordered. However, finding this troublesome in various ways, we were first told to conduct the ceremony according to the protocols of fundraising sumo and other formal sumo ceremonies. Nevertheless, since this is a rare matter for people of our status, we repeatedly made our request, but were told that such measures were unnecessary and to let the matter pass. For this reason, we prepared everything from the ring to the four pillars, silk wrapping, and ceremonial cords according to the formal sumo protocols. Then, on the evening of the 10th of the same month at the sixth hour of dusk, word came from the Yoshida family within Lord Hosokawa Etchū-no-kami's household that the elders and referees should come urgently. Accordingly, we went immediately, and today Lord Toda Uneme-no-shō summoned Oikaze and ordered that the Shogun's viewing ceremony be conducted according to ancient laws. As a result, the ring was immediately rebuilt, and many officials and laborers from the construction office came out and completely rebuilt everything according to Oikaze's directions. Regarding this, we were told that if the referees and sumo wrestlers understood proper etiquette, or if they were ignorant of it, instructions should be given so they would be ready by tomorrow. However, we replied that we generally understood the ancient protocols. Therefore, tomorrow we will receive general instruction at the preparation grounds early and perform our duties without error. On the dawn of the 11th day of the 6th month, at the sixth hour, all the senior elders, referees, and sumo wrestlers assembled in dyed undergarments, hemp formal wear, and carrying swords at the front of the rice-pounding building outside Takebashi Gate, and entered the venue's rest area to wait in attendance.      Traditional Knowledge of the Viewing Ring 1. The space between the four pillars is three ken square. Inside from pillar to pillar, the ring consists of 7 bales each on four sides, totaling 28 bales representing the 28 constellations of heaven. Combined with the four heavenly kings of Sumeru in the east, west, south, and north directions, the total number is 36, representing the geographical and mystical principles governing the ancient system of 36 sumo wrestlers.
