（宮の雑仕女が）見ていたところ、（男は）沓（くつ）を取って奥へ投げ入れ、そのまま上がり込んでしまった。このように、みっともないことを繰り返しているうちに、身も滅んでしまいそうなので、ついには破滅してしまうに違いないと思い、この男は「どうしたものか。私の（女への）募る思いを鎮めてください」と、仏や神にも祈り申し上げたが、（恋心は）ますます強くなるばかりと感じられ、やはりどうにも堪えられないほど恋しくてたまらなかったので、陰陽師を呼んで、「恋をしてしまった」と言う、祓えの道具を持参させて出かけた。祓えをすればするほど、いっそう悲しいことが次々と増えて、以前よりもいっそう恋しくてたまらなく思われたので、
恋をしてしまったと、御手洗川（みたらしがわ）でした禊（みそぎ）を、神はお受けにならなかったことよ
と詠んで、帰って行った。
この帝は、お顔立ちが美しくいらっしゃって、仏の御名を心を込めてお唱えになり、御声はたいそう尊くて唱えていらっしゃるのを聞いて、女はたいそう泣いた。「このような君にお仕えせずに（過ごすのは）、前世の報いが薄く悲しいことだ。この男に縛られて（仕えることができない）」と言って泣いた。
このようなことがある中で、帝がこのことをお聞きつけになり、この男を流罪にお遣わしになった。するとこの女の従姉妹である宮の御息所（みやすんどころ）が、女を（その場に）縛りつけ、蔵に閉じ込めて折檻なさったので、（女は）蔵に籠って泣いた。

As (the palace attendant) was watching, (the man) took his shoes, threw them into the interior of the room, and climbed up (into the women's quarters). Carrying on in this unseemly manner repeatedly, he felt that his very being was on the verge of ruin, and that he would surely be destroyed in the end. Thinking "What am I to do? Please calm this longing heart of mine," he prayed to the buddhas and gods alike, but his passion only seemed to grow stronger, and still he found it unbearably agonizing to yearn for her. He therefore summoned an *onmyōji* (yin-yang diviner), told him that he had "fallen in love," had him bring the implements for a ritual purification (*harae*), and went to the ceremony. Yet the more the purification rites were performed, the more his sorrow multiplied, and he found himself longing for her even more than before. And so he composed:
*Having performed the misogi purification at the Mitarashi River to be rid of this love — it seems the gods have refused to accept it.*
And with that, he departed.
This Emperor had a handsome countenance, and with deep devotion he recited the names of the buddhas; hearing him chant in his most sacred and reverent voice, the woman wept bitterly. She wept, saying: "That I cannot serve such a sovereign — this is the sorrow and misfortune of my past-life karma. I am bound by this man (and cannot be free)."
In the midst of all this, the Emperor came to hear of the matter, and had the man sent into exile. Thereupon this woman's cousin, the Imperial Consort (*Miyasundokoro*), had the woman bound in place, confined her in a storehouse, and punished her severely. The woman, shut up in the storehouse, wept and wept.
