【Right folio】 *(Episode 94, conclusion)* *Aki no yo wa / kasuga wasururu / mono nare ya* / *kasumi ni kiri ya / chie masaru ran* (Does the autumn night cause one to forget the spring days? The mist of autumn deepens into layer upon layer of fog, far surpassing the haze of spring.) And so the poem was sent. The woman composed a reply: *Chiji no aki / hitotsu no haru ni / mukahame ya* / *momiji mo hana mo / tomo ni koso chire* (Could a thousand autumns ever match a single spring? No — for both the crimson leaves and the cherry blossoms must fall together in the end.) --- **Episode 95** Long ago, there was a man who served at the court of the Nijō Empress. There was a woman who likewise served there, and the two would continually exchange glances, and the man kept up his courtship of her. He said that he wished somehow to meet her, even if only through a screen, so as to ease at least a little the uncertainty of the longing he had been pressing so deeply within himself. The woman, being very discreet, met him through a screen. As they were talking together, the man composed: *Hikoboshi ni / koi wa masari nu / amanogawa* / *hedatsuru seki wo / ima wa yame te yo* (My love surpasses even that of the Herdsman Star. O barrier of the Milky Way that keeps us apart — cease now, I beg you, at last.) Moved and charmed by this poem, the woman consented to meet him fully. --- **Episode 96** Long ago, there was a man. He had been speaking to a woman of his feelings, pressing his suit, and the months and days had passed. Since she was no rock or tree, perhaps she began to feel sympathy for him — gradually she came to feel moved (*aware*) by his devotion. Around that time, it was near the full moon of the sixth month (*Minazuki*). One or two sores (*kasa*) appeared on the woman's body. The woman sent word: "Now I have no inclination at all. One or two sores have appeared on my body. The season is also most oppressively hot. When a little of the autumn wind begins to blow —" 【Left folio】 【Illustration】
