とあそばしける所へ。蛸（たこ）四五 盃（はい）買（かい）もて来りければ。一休
よろこび給ひて。此たこむざ〳〵とくふもむざんの事也。引
だうの頌（じゆ）なくてはとて一首

やれ引導（いんだう）はすみけるぞ。火葬（くはそう）にすべきか。土葬（どさう）にすべ
きか。いや〳〵水さうにせよとて。手とり。足とり。もく
よくさせて。柚酢（ゆず）をかけて。ひたぐひにくひて。さるだん
ばうへ行く。酒（さけ）などまいりけるが。余（あま）りにおほく蛸（たこ）をま
いりければ吐却（ときやく）なされけるに。皆たこ也。旦那衆（たんなしう）是をみ
て。おどろき申けるは。一休和尚は。仏のやうに思ひしに
現代語訳
とお詠みになったところへ、蛸を四、五杯買って持って来たので、一休は喜ばれて、「この蛸をむやみやたらに食うのも無残なことだ。引導の頌がなくては」とおっしゃって一首、
千手観音蛸手多 蛸の手の多い千手観音よ
刺懸柚酢拝如何 刺身にして柚酢をかけて拝むのはいかがなものか
佐州一味天然別 佐渡の一味は天然で別格だ
他禁戒任老釈迦 他の禁戒は老釈迦にまかせよう
「やれ引導は済んだぞ。火葬にすべきか、土葬にすべきか。いやいや水葬にせよ」とおっしゃって、手を取り足を取り、もくもくと（水で）よく洗わせて、柚酢をかけて、ひたすらに食って、それから檀家の家へ行った。酒なども召し上がったが、あまりにたくさん蛸を食べたので吐いてしまわれたところ、皆蛸であった。檀那衆がこれを見て驚いて申したことには、「一休和尚は仏のようにお思いしていたのに」
英語訳
When he had composed this poem, someone brought four or five cups worth of octopus, so Ikkyu was delighted and said, "To eat this octopus carelessly would be a pitiful thing. We must have a funeral verse," and composed this verse:
Thousand-armed Kannon, octopus with many arms
How about cutting it up, adding citrus vinegar, and worshipping it?
The flavor of Sado is naturally exceptional
Other precepts I leave to old Shakyamuni
"Well, the funeral service is finished. Shall we cremate it or bury it? No, no, let's give it a water burial," he said, taking it by the arms and legs, washing it thoroughly (with water), adding citrus vinegar, and eating it voraciously. Then he went to a patron's house. He drank sake and such, but having eaten too much octopus, he vomited, and it was all octopus. The patrons who saw this were shocked and said, "We thought Reverend Ikkyu was like a Buddha, but..."
