びをつりてくひ給ひし処（ところ）を。あり〳〵と絵（ゑ）にかき。
なを一しゆのうたをかゝれける
いにしへのかしこき祖師（そし）はゑびを釣（つり）し
われはあほうで魚（うほ）をつりてくふ
とあそばしてかの僧達（そうたち）にさし付。さあらぬふりに
てゐられける。みな〳〵かのゑをみて。扨も奇容なる
絵や見事なるかなの書（かき）ぶりやとかんじけるが。其中
にも老僧（らうそう）あざわらひて。古（いにしへ）の祖師（そし）の蜆（ゑび）を御つり
ありく参りしとて。貴僧（きそう）の若（わか）きなりにて其 魚（うほ）
をつりまいらん事。鵜（う）のまねする烏（からす）水のむとい
ひしたぐひなり。扨貴僧は此 蜆子（けんす）和尚のゑびつり
てまいりし御心様をしろし召けるか。中〳〵およびなき
事やとわらはれければ。一休すこしもさはかず色（いろ）をも
かへず。扨々 貴僧（きそう）のおろかなる心にては。蜆子のゑひを
喰（くい）し心根がてん参るまじ。それ人は若（わか）きにもよら
ず老たるにもよらず。道におゐて老若（らうにやく）は有まじ
。老たるか悟道（ごだう）をせば門外（もんぐはい）のむく犬（いぬ）も悟道（ごだう）したる
かしく。毛（け）もぬけ。すねたゝず。にじりありくは。若き
とく悟道（ごだう）せまじきや。世 尊（そん）は三十 成道（しやうだう）と承り。我らが
祖（そ）達磨大師（たるまだいし）の古（いにしへ）を承（うけたまは）るに。或時（あるとき）般若多羅尊者（はんにやたらそんじや）の
来（きた）り給ひて。光明（くはうみやう）かくやくたる璧（たま）をさゝげ。三人の皇（わう）
子（し）に見せ給ひつゝ。心をためさんとて。おの〳〵此 玉（たま）を

蝦を釣って食べなさった場面を、ありありと絵に描き、なお一首の歌を書かれた。
昔の賢い祖師は蝦を釣った
私は愚か者で魚を釣って食う
とお作りになって、かの僧たちに差し出し、何でもないような顔をしていらっしゃった。皆々がその絵を見て、「なんとも奇妙な絵だ、見事な書きぶりだなあ」と感嘆したが、その中でも老僧が冷笑して、「昔の祖師が蝦をお釣りになって歩かれたといって、貴僧の若いお身で、その魚を釣られることは、鵜の真似をする烏が溺れるという類のことです。さて貴僧は、この蜆子和尚が蝦釣りをなさった御心を御存知なのでしょうか。とてもできないことですよ」と笑われた。
一休は少しも動じず、顔色も変えずに、「まことに貴僧の愚かな心では、蜆子の蝦を食った心根が理解できないでしょう。それ、人は若いからといってでもなく、老いているからといってでもなく、道において老若はあるべきではない。老いた者が悟道すれば、門外の無駄犬も悟道したかのように、毛も抜け、すねもたたず、にじり歩くのは、若くして悟道すべきではないというのか。世尊は三十歳で成道されたと承っている。我らが祖の達磨大師の昔を承るに、ある時般若多羅尊者がやって来られて、光明かくやくたる璧を捧げ、三人の皇子に見せられつつ、心を試そうとして、おのおのこの玉を
英語訳
...vividly painted a scene of him fishing for and eating shrimp, and further wrote a poem:
The wise patriarchs of old fished for shrimp
I am a fool who fishes for fish and eats them
Having composed this, he presented it to those monks and maintained an indifferent expression. All of them looked at the painting and marveled, "What a curious picture this is, what excellent brushwork!" However, among them an old monk sneered and said, "Just because ancient patriarchs went about fishing for shrimp, for you, venerable sir, young as you are, to go fishing for fish is like a crow trying to imitate a cormorant and drowning. Well then, do you truly understand the heart-mind with which Master Kensu fished for shrimp? This is quite beyond your capability," and he laughed.
Ikkyu was not disturbed in the least and did not change his expression, saying: "Indeed, with your foolish mind, venerable sir, you cannot comprehend the heart-mind with which Kensu ate shrimp. Listen, whether a person is young or old matters not - in the Way there should be no distinction between old and young. When an old person attains enlightenment, even a useless dog outside the gate acts as if it too has attained enlightenment - its hair falls out, its legs fail, and it crawls about. Does this mean the young should not attain enlightenment? I understand that the World-Honored One achieved enlightenment at thirty.
