現代語訳
高慢は野暮と通の二道に心を尽くし、諸処の遊里を巡り、人の遊びを見るに、まず金々仕立ての息子株が芸者まじりの大騒ぎ。見かけは粋なようだけれど、通というものはこうしたものさ。里は花の先にあらわれ、見栄坊という病があるので、これもできたことではない。郡内縞に萌黄裏、田舎太りの羽織を今日の晴れ着として、人の騒ぎを立ち聞きする楽しみのところは、同じ心意気。果ては天地の相違、どちらにも千億あるので、いずれを取ろうかと、さすがの高慢も眉を八の字にする。
「あの折は下屋の屋敷へ行くと言って、てめえの厭みも久しいものだ。先度目黒の時はお澄さんを連れて、わっちをばよく流しなすった。たんとお礼を申しましょう。」
「あの息子も俺に似て、なかなか高慢だ。」
「お江戸は繁華な所だよ。もし、これから浅草の観音さんへ参ります。」
英語訳
The arrogant man devoted himself to both the ways of the uncouth and the sophisticated, making rounds of various pleasure quarters and observing people's diversions. First, he saw wealthy young men in fine attire making a great commotion with geishas. Though they appeared stylish, this is what being "sophisticated" amounts to. The quarter reveals itself at the tip of the flower, and since there's an ailment called vanity, this too is not a proper accomplishment. Wearing Gunai-striped clothing with yellow-green lining, a provincial corpulent man's haori as today's formal wear, he takes pleasure in eavesdropping on people's revelries - this shows the same spirit. In the end, there's a vast difference like heaven and earth, and with billions on either side, even the notably arrogant man furrows his brow in an inverted V as he wonders which to choose.
