現代語訳
高慢はよくよく思案するに、人が宝とする金銀を石ころのようにしなければ、所詮通とは言われない。世間で野暮だの馬鹿だのと言われる人は、皆けちん坊から起こる。金を使って通と言われるのも楽しみ、出し惜しみして金が貯まるのも楽しみ。同じことなら金ができるのが良さそうなものだと、倹約の心が起こり、味噌を焼く（けちになる）。
二十七歳よりありがたがり、神棚の灯明も灯心一筋で済ませるほどけちになる。
「旦那様は急にけちなことばかりおっしゃる。」
「竈の下もいい加減に火を引け。芝居をねだったとしても、所詮らちはあくまい。」

The arrogant man, upon careful consideration, realized that unless one treats gold and silver—treasured by others—like mere pebbles, one cannot truly be called sophisticated. People who are called boorish or foolish by society all stem from being miserly. There's pleasure in spending money and being called sophisticated, and there's also pleasure in hoarding money through stinginess. If it's all the same, it would seem better to accumulate wealth, so a frugal spirit arose, and he became tight-fisted.
From the age of twenty-seven, he became overly devout and economical, using only a single wick for the oil lamp on the household shrine.
