If this teaching is followed, the number of smallpox-afflicted children dying untimely deaths will surely diminish. There is no greater stratagem for saving people than this. Being earnestly beseeched to record these teachings in a single volume and share them with the world, and thinking that it might at least serve as a small means of saving others, I found I could not readily refuse. In the end, reasoning that "a writing for common folk is for the sake of common folk," I took up my humble brush and set down these words. Written in the early winter of the eighth year of Bunsei, the year of Kinoto-Tori (1825), by Kikeiya-fu, at the waterside of Shōheibashi.

Tōsō Yōjō Ketsu (Secrets of Smallpox Health Maintenance)
Care and Convalescence
1. Regardless of the number of days of initial fever, from the day the rash first appears, one counts as follows: three days for the eruption stage (desoroi), three days for the swelling stage (mizuumi), three days for the suppuration stage (hon'umi), and three days for the crusting stage (kase) — making the twelfth day the appointed day for the sake-yu (ceremonial bathing). The specifics of this procedure are described in detail in the *Imashimegusa*. However, for severe cases of smallpox, the days should be extended accordingly, and one should also take into account rainy or windy weather. Simply put, a warm and calm day is to be preferred. Applying the sake-yu too hastily, or exposing the child to wind and cold...
