【Right folio】 ...exposed to wind and cold, the child may suddenly develop a critical change in condition (henshō) and die. The bodies of young children are by nature delicate and tender. Furthermore, once the smallpox pustules erupt and the pus is discharged outward, the interior of the body inevitably becomes depleted; the vital energy (genki) has not yet recovered, the skin and flesh have not yet regained their firmness, and the spleen and stomach are weakened — making the child susceptible to wind and cold, and easily harmed by food and drink. Particularly after the smallpox has run its course, parents and caregivers tend to grow lax, and the child naturally falls into poor health habits. The onset of a critical change in a smallpox condition is as swift as the turning of one's palm. One must be vigilant and take great care. 【Left folio】 1. From beginning to end, one must avoid wind and cold. Likewise, when too much fire is stoked and the room becomes steamy, it suppresses the yang energy (yōki) and is therefore unfavorable. If excessive sweating occurs, it leads to a collapse of yang (bōyō), causing a critical change in condition. Smallpox occurring during the heat of summer requires especially careful attention. One should simply ensure that the child does not sweat, and is not exposed to wind. Cloth padding should be applied carefully to the garments so that they are not soiled by urination or defecation. Even if the clothes become slightly soiled, one must on no account change them. This too is a cardinal precaution. 1. Smallpox has the spleen and stomach as its foundation. Therefore, food should be given in appropriate measure. If the child eats to excess, the stomach (will be damaged...)
