Either condition invites a critical change in the illness. This is something that caregivers must keep well in mind. The child must not eat cold things. Likewise, things that are excessively hot are also harmful. Both damage the spleen and stomach.
1. There are very many cases of people using rhinoceros horn (saikaku) incorrectly, thereby damaging the spleen and stomach, falling into a state of deficient cold (kyokan), and dying as a result. For this reason, the ancient physicians cautioned against the careless use of rhinoceros horn. Physicians of recent times, not knowing its proper efficacy, say that for smallpox, no matter the circumstance, using rhinoceros horn will dispel the poison and

raise the mounds (of the pustules). Laypeople follow suit, believing rhinoceros horn to be a wondrous medicine that raises the mounds of smallpox, and there are those who use it regardless of whether the patient's condition is one of deficiency or excess. This is a grave error. It is like paying money to purchase one's own misfortune — a truly lamentable thing.
1. There are those who administer salted salmon (shiobiki sake). According to their reasoning, using something strong will raise the mounds of smallpox. But from what text does this come, and whose teaching is it? Those without proper learning frequently make such errors. On the contrary, it increases the poison and (obstructs proper) suppuration...
