[Right page] (Continuing from the previous page: regarding the use of salted salmon) By the time the pustules begin to suppurate, itching breaks out. This is entirely the harmful effect of having used salmon. One: People in the world believe that Teriaka (Theriaca/Theriac) is made with Hanpi (viper/mamushi snake) and consider it a miraculous medicine for smallpox, using it indiscriminately. This is a mistake. What is brought from the Netherlands these days is all five-ingredient Teriaka, which contains no Hanpi. While it is true that the genuine nine-ingredient formula does contain Hanpi, it is rarely imported. Moreover, Teriaka is a Dutch remedy for colds and coughs. According to Dutch physicians, it was occasionally used in the past to help bring out the smallpox eruption, but is no longer used for that purpose today. Upon examining its formula, [Left page] it is not a medicine for smallpox. People do not know this, and to say that using it "adds vigor" or "raises the mountains" (brings out the pustules) is like using a cold remedy for hernia pain (senki). Is this not laughable? One: Physicians of the Kohō (classical Chinese medicine) school often begin by saying they are "resolving toxins" and administer Shien (purple pills) as a purgative, then follow this with Hanpi to "add vigor," as they say. Alas, what can this mean? Smallpox has conditions of deficiency and excess, and people have varying degrees of strength and weakness. Whether to purge or to supplement depends on the symptoms. In the writings of the ancient physicians, regarding smallpox toxin— (continues on the next page)
