口伝（くてん）など有（あり）能（よく）巧者（こうしや）に聞習（きゝなら）ふべし
一 女蝶（めてう）男蝶（おてう）を見様（みやう）の事（こと）二 疋（ひき）つるみたる時（とき）其内（そのうち）にほそ
くちいさめ成（なる）をおてうとしりて取捨（とりすつ）べし其中（そのうち）にて
むつちりとふとく大（おゝ）ふり成（なる）をめてうとしりてのこすべし
若（もし）二 疋（ひき）共（とも）にふとく見（み）ゆる時（とき）はおてう共（ども）を別（べつ）の紙（かみ）に離（はな）し
置（おき）見（み）わくるなりもしめてうの中におてうのこれはうぢ

事（こと）なくして一 所（しよ）に居（ゐ）ると知（しる）べし
一 種紙（たねかみ）は何（いつ）にても不苦（くるしからす）種（たね）の多（をゝ）きをよしとすひしと
ひり付たる紙はよし其紙六七分のおもみに引わけ
たるを紙ともにかけたる種（たね）莚（むしろ）壱 枚分（まいぶん）とつもるなり
全紙（ぜんし）壱 枚（まい）種（たね）ともに七匁弐三分 位（くらゐ）此内壱匁弐三分は
紙のおもみに引（ひく）なり但（たゝし）これは厚（あつ）き美濃紙（みのかみ）一 枚（まい）の積（つもり）
なりとかくむしろ壱 枚（まい）のたねの積（つも）りは正み六分 位（くらゐ）
と知（しる）へし但（たゝし）是（これ）は不功成時（ぶこうなるとき）のぶんりやうなり紙（かみ）にて

口伝などもあるので、よく熟練者に聞いて習うべきである。
一、雌蝶と雄蝶を見分ける方法について。二匹が交尾している時、その中で細く小さめなものを雄蝶と知って取り除くべきである。その中でむっちりと太く大振りなものを雌蝶と知って残すべきである。
もし二匹とも太く見える時は、雄蝶どもを別の紙に離して置き、見分けるのである。もし雌蝶の中に雄蝶がいれば、これはうじうじとして尻を振り、他の虫にすり回るものである。その虫が雄虫である。また取り除いて置いた雄蝶の中にもし雌蝶があれば、雄蝶より取り付くものである。雌蝶は動かずにいるものである。
この方法でよく知ることができる。とにかく雌蝶は尻を振ってすり回る

ことなくして一所に居ると知るべきである。
一、種紙は何でも構わない。種の多いのを良しとする。びっしりと産み付けた紙は良い。その紙を六、七分の重さに引き分けたものを、紙と共にかけた種で莚一枚分と積もるのである。
全紙一枚は種と共に七匁二、三分位である。この内一匁二、三分は紙の重さを引くのである。ただしこれは厚い美濃紙一枚の積もりである。とにかく莚一枚の種の積もりは正味六分位と知るべきである。ただしこれは不作の時の分量である。紙にて切り分けたものは悪い。本来はその種紙の虫が孵化して出るのを羽で払った分を、右の六分くらいの目分量に

1. Regarding the method of distinguishing female and male butterflies: When two are mating, know that the thinner and smaller one among them is the male butterfly and should be removed. Know that the plump, thick, and large one among them is the female butterfly and should be kept.
If both appear thick, separate the male butterflies to different paper and distinguish them. If there is a male butterfly among the females, it will restlessly shake its tail and rub against other insects. That insect is the male. Also, if there is a female butterfly among the males that were set aside, it will attach to the males. Female butterflies remain motionless.
One can know well by this method. In any case, female butterflies do not shake their tails and rub around

but remain in one place, as one should know.
1. Any kind of seed paper is acceptable. Having many seeds is considered good. Paper with eggs laid densely is good. When this paper is divided into portions of six to seven bu in weight, the seeds together with the paper amount to one mat's worth.
One full sheet weighs about seven monme and two to three bu together with the seeds. Of this, one monme and two to three bu accounts for the weight of the paper. However, this is the calculation for one thick Mino paper sheet. In any case, one should know that the seeds for one mat amount to about six bu net weight. However, this is the quantity for times of poor harvest. What is cut and divided with paper is bad. Originally, when the insects from that seed paper hatch and emerge, the portion swept away with wings should be measured to about six bu as mentioned above.
