牡鹿郡石巻の米津屋平之丞の船が寛政五年（1793年）十一月に川口を出港し、同月二十九日に日本の領海から吹き流され、翌寛政六年（1794年）五月十日にロシア国へ漂着した。船頭と水主合わせて十六人のうち、船頭の平兵衛と水主二人の計三人がロシアで病死した。残る十三人のうち九人は自分の意志でロシア国に留まり、四人は同国から八十一人乗りの船で長崎まで送り届けられた。享和三年（1803年）六月十日にロシア国の都ペテルブルクという所を出港し、文化元年（1804年）九月六日に長崎に到着し、同三年（1806年）二月に帰国した。およそ十四年を経て再び故郷に戻ったその事を夜話として聞き取り記録したものである。

A ship belonging to Yonezu-ya Heinojo from Ishinomaki in Oshika District departed from Kawaguchi in the 11th month of Kansei 5 (1793). On the 29th of the same month, it was blown away from Japanese territorial waters and drifted to Russia, arriving on the 10th day of the 5th month of Kansei 6 (1794). Of the sixteen crew members including the captain and sailors, three people - Captain Heibei and two sailors - died of illness in Russia. Of the remaining thirteen, nine chose to stay in Russia of their own accord, while four were sent back to Nagasaki on an 81-person ship from that country. They departed from St. Petersburg, the capital of Russia, on the 10th day of the 6th month of Kyowa 3 (1803), arrived in Nagasaki on the 6th day of the 9th month of Bunka 1 (1804), and returned home in the 2nd month of Bunka 3 (1806). This is a record of their night-time conversations about their experiences, written down after they returned home following approximately fourteen years away.
