## 【左丁】ヤールホーゴル（年鳥）

瓜哇島（ジャワ島）の南、キワボンケ（地名）に産する。

甚だ得難い鳥である。長寿の鳥であるがゆえに「ヤール」（オランダ語で「年」と訳す）「ホーゴル」（オランダ語で「鳥」と訳す）という。大きさは鳩（ハト）より大きい。目は淡黒で郭繡（縁取り模様）があり、嘴は大きく、付け根より上、また嘴を漆塗りにしたように見える。嘴の先は黒く、中ほどは黄白色。足は淡青色。頭は黒く冠がある。目の周辺および喉は淡青色。頂・胸・背・翼（しょく）・尾は黒。腹および翅の端（先端）は純白。

熱い飯をもって飼う。二、三日に一度、飛蠊虫（ゴキブリ）を与えて飼うのがよい。水鳥である。この嘴（の標本）、寛政十一〔年…〕

## [Left Folio] Yāru Hōgoru (the "Year-Bird")

This bird originates from Kiwabonke, in the southern part of the island of Java (瓜哇島).

It is an exceedingly rare and difficult bird to obtain. Because it is a long-lived bird, it is called "Yāru" (translated as "year" [from Dutch *jaar*]) + "Hōgoru" (translated as "bird" [from Dutch *vogel*]). In size it is larger than a pigeon (dove). The eyes are pale black with a decorative border (*kakushū*), and the beak is large; from the base upward, it resembles something lacquered. The tip of the beak is black, the middle portion is yellowish-white. The feet are pale blue. The head is black with a crest. The area around the eyes and the throat are pale blue. The crown, breast, back, wings, and tail are black. The belly and the tips of the wings are pure white.

It is fed with hot cooked rice. Every two or three days, it may also be fed cockroaches (*hirakamushi* / flying cockroaches). It is an aquatic bird. This beak [specimen was obtained/recorded in] the eleventh year of Kansei [1799…]
