現代語訳
お清は宝を取り返しにやって来たが、桃太郎に恋をしてしまい、謀り事も無駄になってしまったので、鬼ヶ島では桃太郎を殺そうと言う。それも悲しいが、桃太郎がまた鬼ヶ島へ行こうと言うのも、里の親の難儀も悲しいと、良くないことを思い始めた。
恋が叶うわけではないけれども、お梅様へ言い訳もなく、我と我が手でかくのごとくして、何とぞ親の命をお助けくださいと書き置きして自害して死んでしまった。皆々不憫に思わぬ者はない。顔は鬼でもしおらしいもので、今どき顔は美しくても心は鬼である者がある中で、しおらしいことである。
桃太郎は不憫に思う。
【お清の台詞】
「お聞き届けあり、もはや心に残ることはありません。南無阿弥陀仏、南無阿弥陀仏」
【男の台詞】
「やれやれ気の毒なことじゃ。どうぞ迷わぬように成仏させてやりたいが、我らでは気がない（力不足だ）」
【書き置き】
何々、書き置きのこと。私事を申し上げるのも恥ずかしながら、鬼の娘でございますが、何とぞ宝を取り返しに参りました様子を申し越し候えども、殿様を見初め申し上げ候。お梅様へは申し訳なく、何とぞ親どもの命をお助け下され候よう願い申し上げたき事は数多ございますが、心せく（急ぐ）ままに書き残し申し上げ候。めでたくかしく。
【挿絵内・お梅の台詞】
「お梅もこの様子を見て、しおらしい親に孝行な。死なずとも償いもあろうものを。さてさて、鬼の手には良い手だと感心する」
英語訳
Okiyo had come to retrieve the treasure, but having fallen in love with Momotaro, her scheming came to nothing. Since the oni on Oni Island now say they will kill Momotaro, this too is sorrowful, but Momotaro saying he will go to Oni Island again, and the troubles of his adoptive parents in the village being sorrowful as well, she began to think ill thoughts.
Though her love would not be fulfilled, without any excuse to offer to Lady Ume, she took matters into her own hands, writing "Please somehow save my parents' lives," left this note, and committed suicide. There was no one who did not feel pity for her. Though her face was that of an oni, she was gentle-hearted. In these times when some have beautiful faces but hearts like oni, her gentleness was remarkable.
Momotaro felt great pity.
【Okiyo's dialogue】
"Please hear my request. There is nothing left in my heart now. Namu Amida Butsu, Namu Amida Butsu."
【Man's dialogue】
"Oh my, what a pitiful thing. We would like to help her achieve peaceful rebirth so she won't wander lost, but we lack the spiritual power."
【Written note】
Various matters in this note. Though it is shameful to speak of personal matters, I am the daughter of oni. Though I came to retrieve the treasure as instructed, I fell in love with you, my lord. I have no excuse to offer Lady Ume. Please somehow save my parents' lives - there are countless things I wish to ask, but time presses, so I leave this note. With respectful regards.

"Seeing this situation, Ume too [observes]: What a gentle, filial child. There would have been ways to make amends without dying. Indeed, for oni hands, this was skillfully done," she says with admiration.
