赤鬼は娘を脅して帰ったが、もしや女のこと、心もとなく、俺が鬼部隊はどういう具合になるまいものではないかと、様子を見に立ち返った。日本の張り込みのことを、あちら（鬼の国）では鬼部隊と言うのである。
「お清が死にました」との家内の騒動、さすが子ゆえの闇討ち（突然の知らせ）で明らかになれば、桃太郎も不憫に思い、親の命を助けたので娘の菩提を弔おうと発心するのは殊勝である。
今に大津の絵に残り、鬼の念仏を申す絵は、この赤鬼の因縁なのである。
家内の者たちが皆々のぞき見る。

桃太郎も打ち出の小槌は入り用（必要）であるので、隠れ蓑や隠れ身の蓑をやろうと言えば、身を忍ぶにこそ欲しいけれどと、国へ帰るのにそれには及ばず、取り揃えて宝になさいと置いて行った。
「嫁がもう帰るのか」と、娘が物を洗濯して待っていた「今に帰る」と言ったより、鬼の留守に洗濯とはこのことである。

The red oni had threatened his daughter and returned, but thinking that since she was a woman, he felt uneasy, wondering what might become of his oni troops, so he turned back to check on the situation. What we call surveillance in Japan is called "oni troops" over there (in the oni realm).
When the household commotion of "Okiyo has died" became clear through this sudden blow typical of concern for one's child, Momotaro too felt pity, and his resolution to hold memorial services for the daughter since he had saved the parents' lives was truly admirable.
The picture of an oni chanting the nembutsu that remains in Otsu paintings to this day comes from this red oni's karmic connection.
All the household members peek and watch.

Since Momotaro also had need of the magic mallet, when he offered the invisibility cloak and straw raincoat, saying "I would like these to conceal myself, but since I'm returning to my country, I don't need them - please keep them all together as treasure," he left them and departed.
"Is the daughter-in-law returning already?" The daughter had been waiting, doing laundry, ever since he said "I'll return soon." This is what "doing laundry while the oni is away" refers to.
