現代語訳
というものがある。大きさは犬のようで、脚の下に皮がある。頭は馬のようで、腰より下は蝙蝠に似ている。その毛は獺に似て大きなものである。その形は獣と魚との二役を兼ね、乞食芝居の定九郎のような、今時のお笑い種である。これが日本の海鹿（あしか）であろう。紀州の海鹿島に多く群れ住んで、幾千となく砂上に眠る。鳴き声は「おう、おう」と響き、いびきの音は殊にすさまじい。その中にお針の老婆さんとも思われるものが、ただ一頭見張り番をしていて、もし漁船が近づく時は、寝過ごしをした遊女を遣り手婆が起こすのと同じように、多くの海鹿を揺り起こして、皆を水中へ転がり入らせるという。

there is such a creature. It is the size of a dog, with skin beneath its legs. Its head is like that of a horse, and from the waist down it resembles a bat. Its fur is like that of an otter but larger. Its form plays the dual role of beast and fish, like Sadakurō in beggar theater - a laughingstock of our times. This must be Japan's sea lion (ashika). They live in large groups on Ashika Island in Kishū, countless numbers sleeping on the sand. Their cries echo "ō, ō," and their snoring sounds are particularly dreadful. Among them, there is one that appears to be like an old needle-woman, serving alone as a sentinel. When a fishing boat approaches, just like a brothel keeper waking up courtesans who have overslept, it rouses the many sea lions and makes them all tumble into the water.
