疱瘡神（ほうそうかみ）は棚（たな）に祭（まつ）りて。 赤（あか）い尽（づく）
しをさ〻げ立（たて）。 木兎（みゝづく）のお伽（とぎ）も
あれど。 麻疹（はしか）は神（かみ）といふまで
にて。 赤（あか）の飯（めし）の沙汰（さた）もなく。 鴞（ふくろう）の
張籠（はりこ）も見えず。 神（かみ）でもない物（もの）
神〳〵と利（り）を付るは。しりもことし
の行童謡（はやりうた）。でこでもないもの。でこ
〳〵といふにひとしく。 何（なに）をもつて
神（かみ）といふや。何をもつてでことか
いふや。 夢中（むちう）でしらぬ俗物（ぞくぶつ）が。 初発（ぞやみ）の
熱（ねつ）のうはことなるべし。 噫（あゝ）この
夏（なつ）いかなれば。かゝる天疫（てんゑき）の

痛ましいことではあるが、しばらく世俗に従って、それでは神とも申し上げよう。しかし疱瘡神は神棚に祭って、赤いものばかりを供え立て、木菟のお伽もあるけれど、麻疹は神というだけで、赤飯の話もなく、梟の張子も見えない。神でもないものを神々と「り」を付けて呼ぶのは、知りもしない今年の流行り歌で、でこでもないものを「でこでこ」というのと同じである。何をもって神というのか。何をもって「でこ」というのか。夢中で知らない俗物が、病気の初期の熱でうわごとを言っているのであろう。ああ、この夏はどうしたことか、このような天の疫病が
