## Page Twenty ### [Upper Section] Regarding the obstacle of "foolishness with respect to the great supernormal powers" (*daijintsū-gu*): the *Vijñaptimātratā* treatise (*Yuishiki-ron*) states that it is eliminated at the tenth ground. Since the obstacle of the six supernormal powers (*roktsū-shō*) is not eliminated at the ninth ground, regarding what is eliminated at the ninth ground, (the commentator) conceals it and says he does not discuss it. That this constitutes interpretation "following the text" (*junmon*) is perhaps based on the preceding passages. --- **Question:** In the present sūtra it says: "The Dharma-body (*hosshin*) is what is made manifest by the two-fold emptiness of persons and dharmas" (etc.). In that case, how does the commentary master (*sōshu*) interpret the distinction between the emptiness of persons (*shōkū*) and the emptiness of dharmas (*hōkū*)? **Response:** "(The commentary says:) 'The object is the emptiness of dharmas; the wisdom is the emptiness of persons'" (etc.). Regarding this: voiding the attachment to a self (*ga-shū*) is called the emptiness of persons; voiding the attachment to dharmas (*hō-shū*) is called the emptiness of dharmas. In both the object that is apprehended (*shoen no kyō*) and the cognizing wisdom (*nōen no chi*), both the emptiness of persons and the emptiness of dharmas should be present. Why then is the distinction of the two emptinesses clarified based on the cognizing (wisdom)? How (should this be understood)? ([Colophon note:] The Venerable Monsignor Shōsen (*Shōsen Sōzu*) raised this question in the four-season (lectures).) **Personal view:** Indeed, the matter of voiding attachment to the self and attachment to dharmas can be present in both the apprehended object and the cognizing wisdom. Hence in the text immediately above the present passage in the commentary, two kinds of "non-existence" (*musho'u*) are clarified: first, the non-existence of the object; second, the non-existence of wisdom (etc.). These two kinds of non-existence are the emptiness of persons and the emptiness of dharmas. Since these two non-existences are already clarified with respect to both the cognizing wisdom and the apprehended object, it is known that the true intention (*jitsugī*) of the Venerable Zizhou (*Sōshū Daishi*) is that he considered this principle to be applicable to both wisdom and its object. However, with regard to the commentary's statement "the object is the emptiness of dharmas; the wisdom is the emptiness of persons," this assignment is made provisionally in order to reveal the meaning that the mind of attachment to self arises in dependence on attachment to dharmas. That is, attachment to dharmas (*hōshū*) is the *āśraya* (that upon which one depends), while attachment to self (*gashū*) is the *āśrita* (that which depends). And wisdom arises in dependence on its object. Therefore the object is the *āśraya* and wisdom is the *āśrita*. Hence, assigning the *āśraya*-like attachment to dharmas to the *āśraya*-like object, one says "the object voids attachment to dharmas"; assigning the *āśrita*-like wisdom to wisdom, one says "it voids (attachment through) the emptiness of persons." That is, the very next passage below — ### [Lower Section] "Attachment to personal self arises in dependence on attachment to dharmas" and "like being confused by a stake" (*mayoi ga kui no gotoshi*) — these passages are exactly this. The intent of the commentary before and after (this passage) appears to be plausible. --- **Question:** The sūtra text says: "There is only suchness (*nyoyo*, *tathatā*) and suchness-wisdom (*nyoyo-chi*)" (etc.). In that case, how is this to be judged in relation to the two benefits (self-benefit and benefit of others)? **Response:** "(The commentary says:) 'In the sūtra, *suchness* refers to self-benefit; *suchness-wisdom* refers to the benefit of others'" (etc.). Regarding this: suchness (*nyoyo*) is the true principle of the dharma-nature (*hosshō shinnri*), and since it is what the body of enjoyment (*juyū-shin*) and the transformation body (*henge-shin*) depend upon, both should have the meaning of the two benefits. Based on this, in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* (*Taihō-ron*) and the *Vijñaptimātratā* (*Yuishiki-ron*), the self-nature body (*jishō-shin*, the Dharma-body) is defined as the dharma of the two benefits. Next, *suchness-wisdom* refers to the self-enjoyment body (*jijuyū-shin*). This should belong solely to the body of self-benefit. Why then is it called "benefit of others"? If so, how (should this be understood)? **Personal view:** Regarding the assignment of self-benefit and benefit of others to the three bodies (*sanshin*), there are three different (approaches). First, according to the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* and the *Vijñaptimātratā*: the Dharma-body (*hosshin*) extends to both benefits; the self-enjoyment body (*jijuyū-shin*) is self-benefit; the other-enjoyment body (*tajuyū-shin*) and transformation body (*hengeshin*) are benefit of others. Second, according to the *Anuttarāśraya-sūtra* (*Mujō-e-kyō*) and the *Ratnagotravibhāga* (*Jisshō-ron*): the Dharma-body is self-benefit; the response body (*ō-shin*) and transformation body (*ke-shin*) are benefit of others. Third, in the present sūtra, that the Dharma-body is self-benefit is said in accordance with the predominant (*tabu*) view. That the self-enjoyment body is (said to be) benefit of others is because it serves as the *āśraya* (basis) for the other-enjoyment body and the transformation body — hence it is spoken of thus. If one speaks of the true principle (*jitsuri*), following what is taught in the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* and the *Vijñaptimātratā*, there is no fault. As for establishing this in accordance with the intent of the commentary, one should cite (the relevant passages) and consult them. --- **Question:** In the present sūtra, the merits of the thirty-two marks (*sanjūni-sō*) and the eighty minor marks (*hachijū-zuigō*) are clarified. In that case, should the mark of the Brahma-voice (*bon'onsē-sō*) be said to surpass the mark of the invisible crown (*mukenjō-sō*)? **Response:** The Venerable Master Puyang (*Bokuyō Daishi*, also known as Shaku-seki) interprets (it as) surpassing (the invisible crown mark). Regarding this: according to (his) interpretation, looking at what the *Yogācārabhūmi* (*Yuga-ron*) says: "the white tuft mark (*byakugō-sō*) and the invisible crown mark (*mukenjō-sō*), when compared to the other marks, have a capacity-producing karmic cause (*nōkan no gyōin*) that surpasses the other marks"; and "when the white tuft mark and the invisible crown mark are compared to each other, the capacity-producing cause of the invisible crown mark surpasses." When determining the superiority or inferiority of the capacity-producing karmic cause, ### [Page Twenty-One, Upper Section] the mark of the Brahma-voice, being already an inferior entity (*geretsu no tai*) among all the marks, leads one to conclude — when considered in terms of its capacity-producing cause — that the invisible crown mark should certainly surpass it. If so, how (should this be understood)? ([Colophon note:] Someone raised this question at a lecture in Matsumuro (*Matsumuro no kō*).) Someone says: There can be arguments on both sides. Because (the idea that) "the Buddha expounds the Dharma with a single voice" (*hotoke wa ichion wo motte hō wo enzetsu su*) and similar (ideas) are attendant (upon the Brahma-voice mark), the mark of the Brahma-voice is said to surpass (others). On the other hand, because (the invisible crown) cannot be seen by the eye, one can also say that the invisible crown mark surpasses. --- *The second (fascicle) among the ten-fascicle set of the newly-built house at Kasuga Shrine.* *The paper was selected and prepared by the Venerable Monsignor Junken-bō (in charge of temple affairs at Hōtoku-in).* *Written from the seventeenth to the twenty-eighth day of the intercalary sixth month of Eiroku 1 (1558, the year of the Earth Horse [Tsuchinoe-uma]).* *May (this act of copying) eradicate sins and generate virtue 〻〻〻〻* Scribe: Seiin --- ## *Saisho mondō-shō*, Fascicle Three: Table of Contents ### Fascicle Three Question: The sūtra says "(one) rejoices in and praises the merits that are present" (etc.). Is rejoicing (*zuiki*) the same as praising (*sandan*)? (Two sides.) Question: The sūtra says "turning the wondrous wheel of the Dharma; upholding and illuminating the wheel of the Dharma" (etc.). Does "wheel of the Dharma" (*hōrin*) refer to the wheels of the Dharma of the three paths — the path of seeing (*kendō*), the path of cultivation (*shūdō*), and the path of no-further-training (*mugakudō*)? Question: Does the physical eye (*niku-gen*) apprehend the verbal karma (*gogō*) of sentient beings? Question: The sūtra says "all such World-Honored Buddhas" (etc.). Does this speak of presently-existing Buddhas (*genzai no hotoke*)? Question: The sūtra says "that Jewel-King Great-Light-Illuminating Tathāgata now presently exists there" (etc.). Which of the three bodies (*sanshin*) is this? Question: The sūtra says "(reaching) the stage of non-retrogression; the stage of one-birth-remaining (*ichishō hosho*)" (etc.). How does the Venerable Zizhou (*Sōshū Daishi*) interpret the stage of non-retrogression (*futaiten no i*)? Question: Does the fourth dhyāna (*daishi-zen*) have the Cloud Ground (*un-chi*) as its basis (*shoe*)? Question: When the sūtra says "all dharmas," does this include the Dharma-body (*hosshin*)? Question: Among solitary Buddhas of the group-dwelling type (*bugyō-dokkaku*), are there those liberated through wisdom alone (*e-gedatsu*)? (Two sides.) Question: The matter of intentional karma (*igō*) being the "superior volition that impels" (*dōhotsu shōshi*). Question: Is the "superior volition that impels (*dōhotsu shōshi*)" that activates bodily and verbal karma called intentional karma (*igō*)?
