（前ページより続き）……の明星」と言うのがこれである。また、俗に「夜半の明星」と言うことがある。これがいずれの星であるかは知らない。木星・火星・土星の三星のいずれかか、あるいは大角・五車の頭・狼大星などが、その時刻に出ているのを見て推測して言うものであろうか。「明星」というのは太白星（金星）に限るものである。仏家（仏教）の昏・暁・夜の三星についての説もはなはだ誤りである。

(Continued from the previous page)...the "Akatsuki no Myōjō" (the Morning Star, lit. "the bright star of dawn"). This is what is commonly so called. There is also a popular expression referring to the "Yahan no Myōjō" (the Midnight Star), though it is unclear which star this refers to. It may be one of the three planets—Jupiter, Mars, or Saturn—or perhaps one observes Daikyaku (Arcturus), the head of the Five Chariots, or the Great Wolf Star (Sirius) appearing at that particular hour and infers accordingly. In any case, the term "Myōjō" (Bright Star) should be limited to the Planet Venus (Taihakusei). The Buddhist doctrine of the three stars of dusk, dawn, and night is also greatly in error.

Although it is said that Mercury, like Venus, orbits around the Sun as its axial center, because it revolves in an orbit very close to the Sun, within every 115 days it is visible only twice—once at dawn and once in the evening—and even then only for about half an hour at a time. If one carefully observes along the line of the ecliptic, any star seen at a position of approximately twelve to thirteen degrees which is not one of the other four planets (among the five) is without doubt Mercury.
