(Continued from previous page) …a hole for the North Pole is opened thirty-six degrees above the north (*ne*) horizon, and a hole for the South Pole is opened thirty-six degrees below the south (*uma*) horizon. Through these holes, the central axis (*manbō*/真棒) of the terrestrial globe is inserted, and together with the supporting ring, the three paths — the Equator, the Ecliptic, and the White Road — are to be rotated.
One: The eighth ring from the inside is the Horizon Ring (*Chiheisen*/地平線). It is colored blue-yellow, and the twelve directional bearings are apportioned upon it. The Meridian Ring is attached at the north (*ne*) and south (*uma*) directions.
One: On the terrestrial globe, the Five Continents are to be marked, and the North Pole is to be marked on the northern supporting ring, so that the hours (*kokugen*/刻限) may be reckoned.
This *Ryaku-tengi* (Simplified Celestial Instrument) was first constructed by Master Hokusui. Unlike the conventional *Kontengi* (Armillary Sphere) that has been in use, it is an instrument that combines all three — the celestial globe (*tenkyūgi*/天球儀), the terrestrial globe (*chikyūgi*/地球儀), and the armillary sphere (*kontengi*/渾天儀) — into one, and for beginners it is exceedingly [well-suited for understanding] the positions of the Sun and Moon, eclipses, and so forth…
