（前頁より続き）…船を出し、午・未の方角に針路を改め、南亜墨利加州（南アメリカ州）の南端を回り、戌・亥の方角に針路を改めてマルゲツサ島へ四千里。そこより同じ針路にて亜細亜州（アジア州）の内、カムチャツカへ三千里。そこより西の方角に針路を改め、日本へ千里。海上の合計、一万四千百里なり。この一里の数は、日本の一里半ほどに当たる。

(Continued from previous page) …setting sail, and adjusting the bearing to *uma-hitsuji* (south-southwest), they round the southern tip of South America, then adjust the bearing to *inu-i* (WNW to NNW) and proceed four thousand *ri* to the Marquesas Islands (*Marugetsu-sa-tō*). From there, continuing on the same bearing, three thousand *ri* to Kamchatka (*Kamosukaduka*) within Asia. From there, adjusting the bearing to the west, one thousand *ri* to Japan. The total distance by sea amounts to fourteen thousand one hundred *ri*. Note that one *ri* as counted here equals approximately one and a half Japanese *ri*.
The above was directly heard and recorded by Master Hokusui from the Russian Grūrasensuteru (*Glovachevsky* or similar), as well as from the shipwrecked men including Sahee (*Sahei*), the captain of the *Wakamiyamaru*, a vessel from the port of Ishinomaki in Sendai, Ōshū.
