**(A Discussion on the Subtle Movement of the North Pole Star, continued)**
…it says. If it is three degrees up and three degrees down, that amounts to six degrees in total. When it differs by as much as six degrees, it can hardly be called "subtle movement" (*bidō*). Hokusui (*北水*) conducted research over many years and attained the ultimate secret of this subtle movement. It cannot be transmitted to those who have not entered the school. This is a matter to be kept in the strictest confidence.
**A Transmission for Measuring the Subtle Movement of the North Pole Star and Determining the True North Celestial Pole**
First, carefully observe and fix the positions of the North Pole Star and the *Taitei Taishi* (太帝大子). Whether the *Taitei Taishi* is above or below the North Pole Star, when it appears as shown in [Diagram 3], it moves alongside the *Hokushin* (true celestial pole) from east to west, yet there is no difference in altitude. This is the critical moment (*kokugen*) for measuring the altitude of the celestial pole above the horizon. Furthermore, when [Diagram 2] appears—with the *Taitei Taishi* to the upper east of the North Pole Star—the North Pole Star is at its lowest point. When [Diagram 4] appears—with it to the lower west—the North Pole Star is at its highest point. In the case of [Diagram 5], or likewise [Diagram 6], if one measures according to the same principle described above, the North Pole Star will appear to be at thirty-six degrees…
