宗近与銘有之刀在之候則太刀鍛冶棒鞘ニ而
御座候由右社之神主吉田宮内少輔与申候
親ハ吉田日向守与申候右日向守書付置候哉
右棒鞘之上ニ小狐丸彰与書付有之候由則右
太刀之格好等委細書付指越候ニ付指上申候右
之太刀いか様の訳ニ而何方ゟ奉納之事ニ候哉
右太刀之儀ニ付何にても承伝候事ハ無御座候
哉与吟味仕候得共其段者曽而相知レ不申候由
申越候此外領内不残吟味仕候江共外ニハ

現代語訳
明神の社がございます。往古より奉納されたものであると申し伝えられており、宗近と銘のある刀がございます。すなわち太刀で、鍛冶棒鞘に入っております。右の社の神主は吉田宮内少輔と申します。その親は吉田日向守と申します。右の日向守が書き付け置いたものでしょうか、右の棒鞘の上に「小狐丸彰」と書き付けがございます。すなわち右の太刀の格好等の詳細を書き付けて指し越しましたので指し上げ申します。右の太刀はいかようなわけで何方より奉納されたものでしょうか。右の太刀の件について何でも承り伝えていることはございませんでしょうかと吟味いたしましたが、その段については全く知ることができませんと
申し越しました。この外に領内を残らず吟味いたしましたが、外にはございませんと申し越しました。右の趣旨をご都合のよい時に申し上げていただけますでしょうか。以上

英語訳
There is a shrine to Myōjin. It is said to have been handed down that this was dedicated in ancient times, and there is a sword with the inscription "Munechika." It is a tachi (long sword) in a kaji-bōzaya (wooden scabbard). The Shinto priest of this shrine is called Yoshida Kunaishōyū. His father was called Yoshida Hyūga-no-kami. Perhaps this Hyūga-no-kami left a written record, as there is an inscription "Kogitsune-maru Akira" on the wooden scabbard. We have written down the detailed appearance of this tachi and sent it forward, so we respectfully submit it. For what reason and from whom was this tachi dedicated? We investigated whether there were any traditions or stories handed down regarding this tachi, but we could not learn anything about that matter at all.
We reported this. Besides this, we investigated the entire domain without exception, but there are no others. Please report the above matter when convenient. The above.
