(Continued from the previous page) During the time of Saemon-no-kami Yoshikage [Asakura Yoshikage], the shrine's landholdings were extensive and several hundred shrine households existed there. After Yoshikage's downfall, [the shrine] gradually fell into decline, and we have heard it was left in a state where only the old ruins remained. Thereafter, when our ancestor, the Middle Counselor [Matsudaira] Hideyasu, received the province of Echizen and entered it, he is said to have arranged for a modest grant of woodland and the like to be donated to the shrine. Subsequently, during the tenure of the same clan's [Matsudaira] Hyōbu-no-tayū [Tadamasa], the said shrine fell increasingly into serious disrepair, whereupon the shrine was rebuilt and a small stipend was allocated. However, since it proved difficult for the head priest (kannagi) to sustain the role, the current Iyo-no-kami [Tadamasa/Yoshinori] allocated a shrine estate (sharyo) of fifty koku. It should be noted that there is no bettō [administrative monk-official], and the head priest is a person called Yoshida Kunai-no-shōfu. Anything beyond this is not known from here [in Edo], so we shall send word to the home domain [Echizen], conduct an inquiry, and report back in due course. As for the accuracy of the above account, it is difficult to guarantee its complete reliability; however, we have related to you, gentlemen, what has been passed down to us by tradition. Respectfully submitted. Matsudaira Iyo-no-kami Fourth month, twenty-ninth day Ōseki Shingorōzaemon Item: On the third day of the fifth month, as a congratulatory gift for the Boys' Festival (Tango), a messenger was sent to present, as customary,御帷子 (o-katabira, an unlined summer robe) and 御単 (o-hitoe, a single-layered robe). Item: On the fifth day of the same month, a messenger was sent to present, as customary, the domain's specialty product of the season's first mackerel (hatsusaba). Item: On a day of the same month (date unknown), in the presence of the Senior Councilors (Rōjū), a written instruction issued by Lord Mizuno Izumi-no-kami (Tadayuki) to the officials in charge of lectures was forwarded to the home domain (Echizen) by His Lordship's direction, and the following was proclaimed: Memorandum (Continued on next page)
