was to be carried out as ordered, and immediately Makino Denzō-dono was appointed as magistrate and we proceeded to undertake this task. When the Hosokawa forces were also ordered regarding the artificial hills, they accepted the task, and saying that they would cut down the mountains at the front of the siege works and construct artificial hills, they carried out road construction throughout, and then stated that artificial hills would not work on top of that, so wooden bridges should be assembled. Then again, they constructed wooden bridges on top of the road construction and carried out siege works, and on top of that again stated that wooden bridges would not work either. However, regarding the wooden bridges, since even the imperial envoys found it difficult to execute in that location, I understand it was ordered to be unnecessary. Under the pretext of dual use, they carried out siege roads or siege works as they pleased. We were ordered to focus solely on artificial hills.
We were repeatedly ordered through Denzō-dono to focus on this single task, so although we had opinions we wished to express, since Denzō-dono restrained us, we proceeded with artificial hills exclusively. Nabeshima-dono also constructed artificial hills. Hosokawa-dono's artificial hills - previously everyone gathered together and built earthwork mountains. Those artificial hills were already sufficient, and a little additional height was added with earthwork. These were long-established artificial hills. I report that the results appeared to be coordinated. Since we built mountains from the ground up, they turned out exceptionally well. Izu-dono and Saemon-dono repeatedly summoned the senior retainers, clearly documenting the matters they ordered, and since siege works could be ordered even to subordinates, the work interval
