　組せ島原に渡り城近く乗浮へ石火矢を放け
　連は城高して舩中ゟは思ふ矢先に不中して業
　空し故早速平戸へ被帰従平戸通詞貞方理
　右衛門石橋庄助両人也世上に謂伝而は阿蘭陀
　人帆柱に登り城中を見る処に城中鉄砲之手た
　連有之是を打落春といふ尤虚説也一犬吠
　れは万犬声をひとしう須とは此等之事成扁
　し従平戸阿蘭陀出舩之節同舩せし通詞
　之語りしは阿蘭陀人五六人陸に召して石火矢
　をうたせらるゝ然共筒口さ希て是に中り一人死

　せり我一所に附添見たる上は何之疑あらん舩に者
　阿蘭陀を召連来りし日本人一人鉄砲下矢に中
　り指を落春と云
又曰唐舩四艘原之城へ被遣此入日銀三拾三貫
　九百九拾目
島原記曰正月中旬之比細川越中守黒田右衛門佐
　両手ゟ番舩五十艘海上に掛置鉄砲を打春是に
　は城兵等難義に存鉄砲之来る方之陣屋々々
　を出に而壁矢玉を相防く

現代語訳

組を編成して島原に渡り、城近くに船を浮かべて石火矢を放ったが、城が高くて船中からは思うような矢先に当たらず、その働きは空しかったため、早速平戸へ帰った。平戸からの通詞は貞方理右衛門、石橋庄助の両人である。世間で言い伝えられているのは、オランダ人が帆柱に登って城中を見ているところを、城中の鉄砲の射手たちがいて、これを撃ち落としたということであるが、もっともな虚説である。一犬が吠えれば万犬が声を揃えるというのは、このような事のことである。

平戸からオランダ船が出航する際に同船した通詞が語ったところでは、オランダ人五、六人を陸に呼んで石火矢を撃たせたが、しかし筒口が狭くてこれに当たり一人が死んだ。私が一緒に付き添って見た上は、何の疑いがあろうか。船にはオランダ人を連れて来た日本人一人が鉄砲の矢に当たって指を落としたという。

また曰く、唐船四艘が原城へ遣わされ、この入用は銀三十三貫九百九十目であった。

『島原記』に曰く、正月中旬の頃、細川越中守、黒田右衛門佐両手から番船五十艘を海上にかけ置き、鉄砲を撃った。これには城兵等が難義に思い、鉄砲の来る方の陣屋々々を出て、壁や矢玉を相い防いだ。

英語訳

They formed units, crossed to Shimabara, floated their ships near the castle, and fired stone fire arrows. However, because the castle was high, they could not hit their intended targets from the ships, so their efforts were in vain, and they quickly returned to Hirado. The interpreters from Hirado were Sadakata Riuemon and Ishibashi Shōsuke.

What is commonly told among people is that a Dutch sailor climbed the mast to observe inside the castle, where there were riflemen in the castle who shot him down. This is indeed a false story. The saying "when one dog barks, ten thousand dogs join in chorus" refers to such matters.

According to what an interpreter who sailed with the Dutch ship when it departed from Hirado related: Five or six Dutch men were called to land to fire stone fire arrows, but the gun barrel was narrow and one person was hit by it and died. Since I was accompanying them and witnessed this myself, what doubt could there be? On the ship, one Japanese person who had brought the Dutch was hit by a rifle shot and lost his finger.

Also recorded: Four Chinese ships were sent to Hara Castle, and the cost for this was 33 kan and 990 me of silver.

According to the "Shimabara Record": Around mid-January, from both forces of Hosokawa Etchū-no-kami and Kuroda Uemon-no-suke, fifty guard ships were deployed at sea and fired cannons. The castle defenders found this troublesome and came out from the various encampments in the direction from which the cannons were coming to defend against the walls and projectiles.
