　　去年之今日者江城に而烏帽子之緒を志
　　免今年之今日は島原尓亭甲之緒を〆者や
　　打立候無定世之ならひ今更候
　　　新玉の年能始尓散花乃
　　　　　名のみ残し亭先懸登ら連
　　　　正月元日　　　　　板倉内膳正

　　　　　　　今一書者宛所無之一通在之
　内膳正死骸は島原江東寺に而令火葬也家人
　村多弥兵衛伊藤半之允守護之京都江登板

　倉周防守江相達終に三州長円寺に改葬法名
　　撐月院殿前尚食奉御剱嶺源光大居士
又曰正月元日江戸に而西之方ゟ大風烈敷吹来り
　て朝ゟ暁迄無止事四方真黒に成候様にな里
　て物之色見江不分年礼出仕之諸大名御籏本
　之輩各令登　城中之騒々敷在之御城御
　座敷雨戸障子皆立廻し於為之間蝋燭数多
　燈し白昼夜之如く何茂惣禮に　御目見仕候
　其古路悪口者共龕之間に而葬礼之儀式い

現代語訳

去年の今日は江戸城にて烏帽子の緒を締め、今年の今日は島原にて甲冑の緒を締めるとは、出陣いたします。無常な世の習いとはいえ、今更ながら感慨深いものがあります。

新玉の年の始めに散る花の
名のみ残して先駆けとなろう

もう一通は宛先のない手紙が一通ありました。

内膳正の遺体は島原の東寺にて火葬に付されました。家臣の村田弥兵衛と伊藤半之允が守護して京都へ上り、板倉周防守に報告した後、最終的に三河国の長円寺に改葬されました。法名は撐月院殿前尚食奉御剱嶺源光大居士です。

また言うには、正月元日に江戸にて西の方から大風が激しく吹いてきて、朝から夜明けまで止むことなく、四方が真っ黒になるほどで、物の色も見分けがつかないほどでした。年始の挨拶で出仕する諸大名や旗本の方々は各々登城されましたが、城中は騒々しく、御城の御座敷では雨戸や障子をすべて立て回し、そのため蝋燭を多数灯して、白昼でありながら夜のようで、皆総礼で御目見得いたしました。その頃、悪口を言う者どもが陰で、葬礼の儀式のようだと忌々しいことを言い回っていました。

Last year on this day, I tied the strings of my court cap at Edo Castle, and this year on this day, I tie the strings of my armor at Shimabara - such is my departure for battle. Though this is the way of our impermanent world, I am deeply moved by this moment.

At the beginning of the new year, like scattered blossoms,
I shall leave only my name behind as I charge ahead as the vanguard.

There was another letter with no addressee.

Naizen-no-sho's remains were cremated at Tōji Temple in Shimabara. His retainers Murata Yahyōe and Itō Han-no-jō escorted the remains to Kyoto and reported to Itakura Suō-no-kami, after which he was finally reburied at Chōen-ji Temple in Mikawa Province. His posthumous Buddhist name was Teigetsuin-den Zen-shōjiki-hōgyo Kenrei Genkō Daiko-ji.

It is also said that on New Year's Day in Edo, a great wind blew fiercely from the west, continuing from morning until dawn without cease, making everything pitch black in all directions so that the colors of things could not be distinguished. The various daimyo and hatamoto who came to pay their New Year's respects each ascended to the castle, but there was great commotion within the castle. In the castle's reception rooms, all the rain shutters and sliding doors were put up, so many candles had to be lit, making it like night even in broad daylight, and everyone performed their formal audience. At that time, malicious gossips whispered among themselves that the ceremony resembled funeral rites, speaking inauspiciously.
