None could hide from this. The commander Daidō Rokurōemon himself reached the base of the wall and fought together with Matsukura's forces. From within the castle they fired muskets, shot stones and projectiles, fanned fires in winnowing baskets, and scattered ashes like falling rain. In addition, they defended with spears and long swords. Those who had reached the base of the wall were struck by stones on their armor and crushed, suffering great hardship. Tōno Magobei, Kimura Shinzaemon, Soga Kyūdayū, Yamauchi Umanosuke, Tsuge Kakudayū, Nonaka Heisaburō, Suga Hansaburō, Yamago Jibyōe, and the same Kichizaemon reached the base of the wall. From the late hour of the Tiger until the hour of the Snake, Matsukura's forces received orders from the inspector to withdraw, so they retreated seventeen or eighteen ken from the base of the wall.
They took position where there were bamboo groves, received further orders, and withdrew at the late hour of the Horse. This was witnessed by the inspector, messengers from various houses, and even masterless samurai. On New Year's Day at the base of the wall, Ishii Kanshichi was killed by musket fire. Since there was no foot soldier commander, when they withdrew from the wall, Okamoto Shinbei was immediately appointed and entrusted to the aforementioned foot soldier commander Yamago Otozaemon, serving until the 27th day of the second month. They had bamboo bundles and palisades erected in various places, fought at the main bailey's Mizute Gate and wooden gate entrance, and worked day and night without rest until Kichizaemon and even his young retainers were wounded and withdrew.
The Saka Family's Old Records state: "From the hour of the Tiger on New Year's Day, the northwest wind was fierce
