　挙砂石打面不能目開昨日之評定に城責刻
　限辰之一點と相定む爰に有馬兵部太輔忠
　頼《割書：後改｜中務》先手与定夜中此城を責落し獨
　之高名にせんと思歟不待相図を刻限数千
　之兵を繰出し大手三之丸堀際に押寄鬨を
　作る此鬨声寄手之諸将雖聞之依時刻相
　違有馬勢とは不思寄暗さはくらし是は今
　朝之城攻を敵知て相図之刻限を違江させ
　んか為に謀に鬨を作る成扁し迚惣勢は鬨を
　も不合静り而音せ須三之丸は大江布津村

　堂崎北有馬之輩三千五百人皆々少茂不騒
　所に之櫓土狭間出堀之内ゟ如雨鉄炮打出す
　時之間に有馬勢手負死人一千人有依而堀兼
　寅之中刻ゟ敗軍春城兵気に乗城戸を開
　て追討す久留米訇々逃亭本陣に引返須
　寄手之諸将見之相図己に相迷也一方之寄
　手之先陣敗北春去共相図定る故は辰之刻諸
　手一同に押寄春
有馬日記曰正月元日江戸自暁乾風木折に吹て
　似暗夜加之大雨甚

現代語訳

砂石が舞い上がり顔面を打ち、目を開けることもできなかった。昨日の評定において城攻めの時刻の期限を辰の一点と定めた。ここで有馬兵部太輔忠頼（後に中務と改める）が先手と定められ、夜中にこの城を攻め落として独りの高名にしようと思ったのか、相図を待たずに時刻限を過ぎて数千の兵を繰り出し、大手三の丸の堀際に押し寄せて鬨の声をあげた。この鬨声を寄手の諸将は聞いたが、時刻が違っているので有馬勢とは思いもよらず、暗闇の中で、これは今朝の城攻めを敵が知って相図の時刻を狂わせるために謀略で鬨を作っているのだろうと思い、全軍は鬨にも合わせず静まり返って音もしなかった。三の丸は大江・布津村・堂崎・北有馬の者たち三千五百人が皆少しも騒がない。

そこへ櫓・土塁の狭間・堀の内から雨のように鉄砲を撃ち出した。短時間のうちに有馬勢は手負い・死人一千人となり、これにより堀を越えることができず、寅の中刻から敗軍となった。城兵は士気に乗じて城戸を開いて追討した。久留米まで逃げ帰り、本陣に引き返した。寄手の諸将がこれを見て、相図はすでに乱れてしまった。一方の寄手の先陣が敗北して去ったが、相図が定まっているので辰の刻に諸手が一同に押し寄せた。

有馬日記に曰く「正月元日、江戸では暁から乾風が激しく木を折るほどに吹いて暗夜のようになり、その上大雨が激しかった」

Sand and stones flew up striking faces, making it impossible to open one's eyes. In yesterday's council of war, they determined that the time limit for the castle assault would be the first point of the hour of the Dragon. Here, Arima Hyōbu-Taifu Tadayori (later changed to Nakatsukasa) was designated as the vanguard. Perhaps thinking to assault this castle during the night and claim sole glory for himself, without waiting for the signal and past the appointed time, he deployed several thousand troops and pressed forward to the moat edge of the main approach to the third bailey, raising battle cries. Although the various generals of the besieging force heard these battle cries, since the timing was wrong, they never suspected it was Arima's forces. Then from the turrets, earthwork loopholes, and within the moats, muskets fired out like rain. In a short time, Arima's forces suffered 1,000 wounded and dead, and because of this could not cross the moat, becoming a defeated army from the middle of the hour of the Tiger. The castle defenders, riding high on their momentum, opened the castle gates and pursued them. They fled all the way to Kurume and returned to their main camp. When the various generals of the besieging force saw this, the signal coordination had already fallen into chaos. Although the vanguard of one wing of the besieging force was defeated and withdrew, since the signal was predetermined, all forces pressed forward together at the hour of the Dragon.

The Arima Records state: "On New Year's Day, from dawn in Edo the northwest wind blew so fiercely as to break trees, making it like a dark night, and in addition there was heavy rain."
