　ゟ松明を投出し稠鋪鉄砲打加希屏へ付候
　者をは敵塀之上ゟ鑓を逆手に持て突状〳〵
　多突殺申候此敗軍い堂し候を板倉内膳正
　殿御覧候而制せら連ん迚馬ゟ御下候得は諸国之
　使者共我先に与競かゝ里候故立花殿人数責損
　し候上矢を射させら連候得与御申候松倉右近
　は床机に腰を掛け兎角之事をふ申岡本新
　兵衛鑓を突立上り是は松倉か持口に而候他之
　者を交江候はぬと申候立花殿は年来近国方

現代語訳

城から松明を投げ出し、激しく鉄砲を打ちかけ、塀へ付いた者を、敵は塀の上から槍を逆手に持って次々と多数突き殺した。この敗軍を見て板倉内膳正殿がご覧になり、制止しようとして馬からお降りになったが、諸国の使者共が我先にと競いかかった故、立花殿の人数が攻め損じた上に矢を射させられたとお申しになった。松倉右近は床几に腰を掛け、あれこれと言わず、岡本新兵衛が槍を突き立てて上がり、「これは松倉の持ち口であって、他の者を交えるべきではない」と申した。立花殿は年来近国方面にいささか遺恨があった故、互いに右の通りであった。

『有馬譜』によると、正月元日、上使板倉内膳正・石谷十蔵が城を攻めた。豊氏（有馬直豊）は三の丸を囲んだ。忠郷（立花忠茂）は未明に兵を率いて塀下に到着し、兵を堀の内に投入した。家臣松田作兵衛等多数が討死した。

From the castle they threw out torches and fired guns intensively. The enemies on top of the walls held their spears in reverse grip and stabbed to death many of those who had reached the walls. Seeing this defeat, Lord Itakura Naizen-no-shō observed this and dismounted from his horse to try to stop it, but since messengers from various provinces competed to charge forward first, Lord Tachibana's forces suffered losses in their attack and were also subjected to arrow fire. Matsuura Ukon sat on a camp stool without saying much of anything, while Okamoto Shinbei thrust his spear upward and declared, "This is Matsuura's assigned sector, and others should not interfere." Lord Tachibana had held some resentment toward the neighboring provinces for years, so both sides behaved in this manner.

According to the "Arima-fu" (Arima Chronicle): On New Year's Day, the imperial envoys Itakura Naizen-no-shō and Ishitani Jūkura attacked the castle. Toyoshi (Arima Naotoyo) besieged the third bailey. Tadasato (Tachibana Tadashige) led his troops before dawn to reach the base of the walls and deployed his soldiers within the moat. His retainer Matsuda Sakubei and many others were killed in action.
