and fled with them. From New Year's Day until the fourth month, the besieging forces remained sitting with their knees drawn up.
According to the "Yaso Seibatsu-ki" (Record of Christian Punishment), Matsuura Nagato-no-kami's retainer Imura Sukebei was the first to reach the base of the third bailey's wall on New Year's Day and was wounded in the hand by a stone. He engaged in thrusting combat through the loopholes, led the charge himself, and then withdrew. Later, Mizuno Suō-no-kami Tadamasu summoned Imura Sukebei and granted him 4,000 koku, making him a retainer.
Also according to the "Yaso Seibatsu-ki," Matsuura Nagato-no-kami's warrior Uda Mokuzaemon was the first to reach the base of the third bailey's wall on New Year's Day and was wounded in the hand by a stone, but he performed meritorious service. He became a retainer of Matsudaira Awaji-no-kami Tsunanori, received a fief of 500 koku, and was put in charge of thirty ashigaru.
According to the memorandum of Sano Yashichizaemon: From around midnight of the hour of the Monkey on New Year's Day, Sōzaemon and I brothers prepared ourselves, and taking twenty-five dōshin and our men with portable shields, we went out to the approach works. The guards on duty had also returned to prepare, and not one person was present. Behind the bamboo shields there was only one person who appeared to be a rōnin. After a while, one group came pressing forward. We coordinated with Itō Hanemon and one of the same name, Sōzaemon, advanced to the very front, pressed forward to a position fifteen or sixteen ken from the wall, concealed our matchlocks and crept forward stealthily. At that point, the forces of Arima Genba-dono suffered defeat while it was still night. The vanguard held out for a while, but the castle...
