覚候間大変出来いたし候様子漸起出家之棟切妻之所毀し
屋根へ這出重蔵を頻に呼候へ共答無之追々七八人程右
場処へ這出候内出火いたし地震も相止不申危候間右之者共
一同善光寺境内へ逃出候処仁王門倒同所ゟ本堂迄四町
程之間幅三間余之間ゆり崩地上堀返候様相成南側五拾七軒
之坊不残倒可申体に而壱人も居合不申候同所後口之方に僧侶
男女凡百五六拾人程無難に而逃込罷在漸夜明之内参詣人
幷土地之者過半死亡纔に一命を助候者多分怪我いたし騒
動に相成大方翌廿五日昼頃追分之方へ立走丹波島へ参候所
渡船場上之方山崩落丹波川塞候由に而渡船場平地同様に而
歩行渡相成夫ゟ四月晦日江戸表へ罷帰候由
一善光寺町拾八丁程之間旅籠屋有之候場所八町は不残崩
倒其余破損亦は無難之場所も有之候へ共処々ゟ出火に而
不残焼失

思った間に大変なことが起こった様子で、ようやく起き上がって家の棟の切妻の所を壊して屋根へ這い出し、平蔵を頻りに呼んだけれども答えがなく、追々七八人ほどがその場所へ這い出してくる内に出火し、地震も止まず危険なので、その者どもが一同で善光寺境内へ逃げ出したところ、仁王門が倒れ、同所から本堂まで四町ほどの間、幅三間余りの間が揺り崩れて地上を掘り返したようになり、南側五十七軒の坊が残らず倒れたような状態で一人も居合わせていませんでした。同所の後口の方に僧侶男女およそ百五、六十人ほどが無事に逃げ込んでおり、ようやく夜明けの内に参詣人並びに土地の者の過半が死亡し、わずかに一命を助かった者も多分怪我をして騒動となり、大方翌二十五日昼頃追分の方へ立ち去って丹波島へ参ったところ、
渡船場の上の方の山が崩れ落ちて丹波川を塞いだということで、渡船場が平地同様になって歩いて渡れるようになり、それから四月晦日に江戸表へ帰ったということです。
一、善光寺町十八町ほどの間に旅籠屋があった場所の内、八町は残らず崩倒し、その余は破損または無事な場所もありましたが、処々から出火して残らず焼失しました。
一、本堂並びに山門、別当住所のみが無事でした。
一、松代の大手が押し潰され、上田城下その外所々で地割れし、泥砂を吹き立て、多分の破損がありました。もっともこの辺りは出火はなく、およそ七里四方の間で大地震があり、二十四日夜から二十五日夜までで止みました。

While thinking this, a great disaster occurred. He finally managed to get up, broke through the gabled section of the house's ridge, and crawled out onto the roof. He repeatedly called for Shigezo but received no answer. As seven or eight people gradually crawled out to that spot, a fire broke out and the earthquake continued without stopping, making it dangerous. So all these people together fled to the Zenkoji temple grounds, where they found that the Niomon gate had collapsed. From that location to the main hall, a distance of about four cho, an area more than three ken wide had been shaken apart and torn up as if the ground had been dug up. The fifty-seven temple quarters on the south side had all collapsed, with no one remaining there. At the rear of that location, about 150-160 monks and laypeople, both men and women, had safely taken refuge. By dawn, more than half of the pilgrims and local people had died, and most of those who barely escaped with their lives were injured, creating great turmoil. Generally around noon on the following 25th day, they departed toward Oiwake and went to Tanba Island, where
the mountain above the ferry crossing had collapsed and blocked the Tanba River, so the ferry crossing had become like level ground and could be crossed on foot. From there, they returned to Edo on the last day of the 4th month.
