[will be investigated and reported].
The above is not an official report but rather a document sent from Matsudai to Edo. On the night of the 24th day of the 3rd month at 9 o'clock, a great earthquake struck. In Shinano Province at Zenkoji Temple, only the main hall and mountain gate remained standing, while the Daikanjin temple and all the monks' quarters and townhouses collapsed without exception. Moreover, fires broke out and everything was burned down completely. Of the over 600 travelers staying at inns within Zenkoji-machi, about 500 died instantly. The same occurred at Inariyama post station in the same province, where again about 600 people died instantly. In Minochi District of the same province, mountain valleys collapsed and rocky debris pushed into the Sai River. The ferry crossing at Tanba became level ground, muddy water spouted up in various places, water accumulated in the Sai River, and parts of Chikuma District were submerged underwater.
Last day of the 3rd month

Fujijiro
This person took Heizo, son of Yonekichi from Yokodera-machi in the same area, as his attendant on a pilgrimage to Zenkoji Temple in Shinano Province. On the 24th of last month, they lodged at the inn Wataya Nizaemon in that place. Due to the special temple exhibition, there were exceptionally large crowds, with about 350-360 people sharing lodgings. Fujijiro was in a twelve-tatami room on the front second floor, sleeping together with seventeen other guests, when around 4 o'clock that same night he suddenly awoke unable to move his body. While the other guests were crying out in distress, the house was crushed and—
