推古天皇の治世から、奈良時代の末期に至るまで、南島は次々と朝廷に朝貢し、たびたび各島の君主に官位を与えられ、あるいは征討や慰撫を受けた。その後太宰府の管轄下となってからは、直接その府に貢献するようになった。その後しばしば離反し、六条天皇・高倉天皇の治世に至っては、半分はすでに叛いていた。源頼朝が鬼界島を攻撃して以降、音信が途絶え、足利氏の中期に至って、再び交流が始まり、明と足利氏の間を取り持った。嘉吉元年、足利氏は初めて琉球を島津氏に属させ、常に兵庫に来て、三年に一度貢物を献上した。その後また途絶え、豊臣氏の時代に至って、再び通交し、たびたび上洛した。

Tributary Relations
From the reign of Empress Suiko to the end of the Nara period, the southern islands continuously paid tribute to the imperial court, frequently receiving court ranks for the rulers of each island, and sometimes experiencing military campaigns or pacification efforts. After coming under the jurisdiction of the Dazaifu, they made tribute directly to that government office. Subsequently, they often rebelled, and by the reigns of Emperor Rokujō and Emperor Takakura, half had already revolted. After Minamoto no Yoritomo attacked Kikaijima, communication was severed. In the middle period of the Ashikaga, relations resumed, and [Ryukyu] mediated between Ming China and the Ashikaga. In the first year of Kakitsu era, the Ashikaga first placed Ryukyu under the Shimazu clan, and [Ryukyu] regularly came to Hyōgo and paid tribute once every three years. Later, relations were severed again, but during the time of the Toyotomi, communication resumed, and [Ryukyu envoys] frequently traveled to the capital.
