『増補多識編』隰草類に載せて曰く
芦（ロ）〈和名〉〈今按ずるに与志（ヨシ）〉〈増補異名〉葦（ヰ）
葭花を名づけて蓬蕽（ホウノウ）と言う〈唐本〉
笋を名づけて虇（クワン）と言う
『本草綱目』では、凡そ葦（ヨシ）の初めて生ずるものを葭と言い、
未だ穂を出さないものを芦（アシ）と言い、長く成長したものを葦（ヨシ）と言う。蓋し
数種があり、その長さが一丈ほどで中空にして皮薄く、
色白いものは芦（アシ）である〈葦也葭也〉
○按ずるに 芦（アシ）は〈和名阿之〉青しの和訓中略である
葦（ヨシ）は〈俗に与之と云う〉弱（ヨワシ）の和訓中略である
葦の花〈蓬農と名づく、一名芀〉『説文』に曰く、葦の
花を芀（テウ）と言う。条を抽き出して遠くを揺らし、華を生じて
而して莩萼がない。今の人はこれを取って
箒とし、芀帚と言う。これである。

"Honzō Kōmoku" (Compendium of Materia Medica) states: Generally, newly sprouted reeds are called ka (葭),
those that have not yet produced ears are called ro (芦), and those that have grown tall are called i (葦). There are
several varieties, and those that are about one jō (10 feet) tall, hollow inside with thin bark,
and white in color are ro (芦) 〈also葦 and 葭〉
○Upon examination: Ro (芦) 〈Japanese name ashi〉 is an abbreviation of the Japanese reading "aoshi" (blue)
I (葦) 〈commonly called yoshi〉 is an abbreviation of the Japanese reading "yowashi" (weak)
Reed flowers 〈called Hōnō, also named chō〉 According to "Setsumun" (Analytical Dictionary), reed
flowers are called chō. They extend stems, sway in the distance, produce blossoms,
but have no chaff or calyx. Present-day people gather them to make
brooms, called chō-bōki (reed brooms). This is it.
